Reading both as commands fits the command just before (“let your heart not be troubled”) and the later call to believe in 14:11. Another common reading takes the first as a statement and the second as a command: “You believe in God; believe also in me.” The two clauses stand in a mirror pattern (believe in God / in me believe), which puts trust in Jesus beside trust in God. Either way the point is the same: the cure for a troubled heart is trust in God and in Jesus together.

Leia com o raciocínio

Others see it from outside: it is visible to everyone. Compare 17:21, 23.

Leia com o raciocínio

What is new is the standard and the source: the love Jesus has shown them, in washing their feet (13:1-15) and in laying down his life (15:12-13). 1 John 2:7-8 calls this commandment both old and new.

just as I have loved you: both the pattern and the ground of their love (Gramática): “Just as” gives the measure of their love and also its reason: they love because he loved them first (compare 15:9, 12; 1 John 4:19). The past tense looks at his love as a whole, shown to the end (13:1).

that you also love one another: the command repeated, now with its standard (Gramática): The second “that” most naturally repeats the content of the commandment. Read as purpose, it gives nearly the same sense: his love was meant to make them love.

Leia com o raciocínio

O bom pastor dá a sua vida pelas ovelhas.

Por que estas palavras

Por enquanto, as notas estão em inglês.

good: the true and worthy shepherd, the model of what a shepherd should be (Sentido da palavra): The word (καλός) is not the usual word for moral goodness. It describes what is fine, worthy and as it should be: the shepherd who is everything a shepherd ought to be, set against the thieves and robbers of 10:1, 8, 10 and the hired man of verse 12. It also carries a note of what is admirable, as in 2:10 (the good wine). Its proof is given at once: he lays down his life for the sheep. The Greek puts the article twice, “the shepherd, the good one”, which marks him out as the one true shepherd, not one good shepherd among others.

I am the good shepherd: Jesus claims the shepherd role that the Scriptures give to God and to his promised king (Eco de outra passagem das Escrituras): In the Scriptures God is the shepherd of his people (Psalm 23:1; 80:2; Isaiah 40:11). In Ezekiel 34 God condemns the shepherds of Israel who fed themselves and let the flock be scattered, and promises to seek and rescue his sheep himself (34:11-16) and to set over them one shepherd, his servant David (34:23). After the leaders have thrown out the man born blind (9:34), Jesus presents himself as that shepherd. This is one of the “I am” sayings with a predicate (6:35; 8:12; 10:7, 9; 11:25; 14:6; 15:1); the stressed “I” sets him against all false shepherds.

lays down his life: gives up his life of his own will, by dying (Expressão idiomática): To lay down one’s life (τίθημι with ψυχή) is a way of speaking that John uses again and again: 10:15, 17-18; 13:37-38; 15:13; 1 John 3:16. It means giving up one’s life in death, freely. Verses 17-18 make clear that Jesus means his own death, which he gives of his own accord. A shepherd in Israel might risk his life against wild animals (1 Samuel 17:34-35); this shepherd goes further and dies for the flock. Here ψυχή means life itself, not the soul as one part of a person.

Leia com o raciocínio

In a picture of sheep the sense is butchering; there is no thought of sacrifice here.

destroy and life: perishing and eternal life (Teologia): The verb “destroy” is the one John uses for perishing (3:16; 10:28), and the life Jesus gives is eternal life, which begins now (3:15-16; 5:24; 10:28). The thief brings the sheep to ruin; Jesus came to give them life that does not end.

more than enough: life in full measure, beyond what is needed (Sentido da palavra): The word means what goes beyond the measure, an overflowing amount. It describes the fullness of the life Jesus gives, not wealth or comfort. The contrast is with shepherds who fed themselves instead of the flock (Ezekiel 34:2-3).

Leia com o raciocínio

John has just said that as Jesus spoke in the temple (8:20) many believed in him (8:30); these are the people he now turns to. They are Jews, as Jesus himself, his disciples and his mother are.

had believed him: the same believers as in 8:30, though the wording changes (Gramática): 8:30 says that many “believed in him”; here John writes “having believed him”, the perfect participle with the plain dative. In John the two ways of speaking often overlap (compare 5:24 with 6:29), so the change of wording does not by itself show a weaker belief. What follows does show that this new belief is tested at once: Jesus makes remaining in his word the mark of a true disciple, and the talk turns hard (8:33, 37). Whether John means the change of wording to hint at that is uncertain.

remain in my word: keep holding to Jesus’s message and living by it (Teologia): Starting to believe is not yet the whole of discipleship; a true disciple stays with what Jesus says. “Remain” is one of John’s key verbs (6:56; 15:4-10), and 8:35 picks it up again: the slave does not remain in the house, the son remains. “Word” is Jesus’s message as a whole, which he received from the Father (8:26, 28, 38). “Truly” means really, in fact, as opposed to in name only.

Leia com o raciocínio

This is the first of seven such sayings in John: the bread of life, the light of the world (8:12), the door (10:7, 9), the good shepherd (10:11), the resurrection and the life (11:25), the way, the truth and the life (14:6), and the true vine (15:1). The “I” is written out and emphatic: the bread they asked for (6:34) is not a thing but a person.

the bread of life: the bread that gives life (Gramática): The genitive describes what the bread does, as 6:33 has just said: it gives life to the world. 6:51 calls it “the living bread”.

coming and believing are one act; the double negative is emphatic (Gramática): The two halves say the same thing in two ways, as Hebrew poetry does: to come to Jesus is to believe in him. οὐ μή is the strongest way of saying “not”, and πώποτε (“ever”) adds more weight to the second half.

Leia com o raciocínio

God is not bound to a body or a place, so he cannot be confined to one mountain or one city (compare 1 Kings 8:27). Since it describes God’s being and does not name the Holy Spirit, the book-wide choice is not to capitalize it.

must: a necessity that comes from who God is (Sentido da palavra): The woman spoke of the place where people “must” worship (verse 20). In Genesis 22:8 Abraham tells Isaac that God will provide the lamb. At the first Passover the blood of a lamb protected Israel (Exodus 12); John later places Jesus’s death on the day the Passover lambs were killed (19:14) and applies to him the rule that none of the lamb’s bones may be broken (19:36; Exodus 12:46). Isaiah 53:7 compares the LORD’s servant to a lamb led to the slaughter, and says he bore the sin of many (53:12). Lambs were also offered every morning and evening in the temple (Exodus 29:38-42). John does not choose between these, and the translation keeps the title as he gives it.
