You can read Open Word Bible without an account, without ads and without being tracked. This page says what we keep when you do sign in, and why.
Reading without an account
We use no analytics, no advertising and no tracking cookies. Every page, font and script comes from our own site, so no other company learns what you read here.
Your reader settings, reading place, bookmarks, highlights, recent searches, reading-plan progress and the chapters you save for offline reading are kept in your own browser, not sent to us. Clearing your browser’s data for this site, or Clear this device on the account page, removes them.
Searching
A search is sent to our server to find its matches. We don’t save your searches or tie them to you, and recent searches stay in your browser.
If you create an account
An account keeps only what it needs to work:
- your email address, which is how you sign in, and a password if you choose one, stored only as a secure hash;
- a display name, if you set one, shown to reviewers on your suggestions and questions;
- your bookmarks and highlights (with the verse’s words as you saw them) and your reading place, so they follow you to your other devices;
- each signed-in device: the browser’s own description of itself, when it signed in and when it was last used (signing out removes it);
- any role you hold, such as reviewer or editor, and the review record of who approved what, and when.
Sign-in links and device keys are stored only as fingerprints that can’t be turned back into working links or keys.
Keeping sign-in safe
To stop abuse, we record each sign-in link that is asked for: the address, the time and the network (IP) address it came from. Wrong passwords are kept for an hour, to limit guessing.
If you sign in with Google, Google tells us your email address and that it has checked it. We ask for nothing else; Google’s own privacy policy covers what it records.
Who else handles your data
We don’t sell your data, share it with advertisers or use it to profile you. A few services help us run the site: Render hosts the site, the server and its database, and, like any host, keeps short-lived request logs; an email service delivers sign-in emails; and when something breaks, an error report goes to Sentry with your address, cookies, searches and the other details of the request removed.
Your choices
On your account page you can download your account details, clear this device, and delete your account. Deleting it removes your email address, display name, password, devices, bookmarks, highlights and reading place.
One exception: a reviewer’s account is kept with the review record, because the record says who approved each sentence. Ask an editor to close it.
Children
Anyone may read Open Word Bible. Accounts are meant for people aged 13 or over; if you are younger, ask a parent or guardian first.
Changes and questions
If we change how we handle data, we will update this page and the date at the top. Questions are welcome on GitHub; please don’t put personal details in a public issue.
