The LORD’s case against his people
1Listen to what the LORD says: \q Stand up, plead your case before the mountains; \q let the hills hear your voice. 2Hear the case of the LORD, you mountains, \q you everlasting foundations of the earth! \q For the LORD has a lawsuit against his people; \q he will argue it against Israel. 3My people, what have I done to you? How have I made you weary? \q Testify against me! 4For I brought you up out of the land of Egypt; \q I redeemed you from the house where you were slaves. \q I sent Moses, Aaron, and Miriam \q to lead you. 5My people, remember what Balak king of Moab plotted, \q and how Balaam son of Beor answered him. \q Remember the way from Shittim to Gilgal, \q so that you may know the saving deeds of the LORD. 6“What shall I bring when I come before the LORD \q and bow down before God on high? \q Shall I come to him with burnt offerings, \q with year-old calves? 7Will the LORD be pleased with thousands of rams, \q with ten thousand streams of olive oil? \q Shall I give my firstborn for my rebellion, \q the child of my body for my own sin?” 8He has told you, mortal, what is good. \q And what does the LORD ask of you except to do justice, to love loyalty, \q and to walk humbly with your God?
Wicked scales and false weights
9The voice of the LORD calls out to the city, \q and the wise will respect your name: \q Listen to the rod of punishment, and to the one who appointed it!ab 10Is there still, in the house of the wicked, \q treasure gained by wickedness, \q and the short measure that is cursed?c 11Can I be counted pure with dishonest scales \q and a bag of false weights?d 12Her rich are full of violence; \q her people speak lies, \q and their tongues deceive with every word. 13So I in turn will strike you a sickening blow \q and bring you to ruin because of your sins.e 14You will eat, but not be satisfied; \q your stomach will still be empty. \q You will store things up, but save nothing, \q and what you do save I will hand over to the sword.f 15You will sow, but you will not harvest; \q you will press olives, but not rub yourselves with the oil; \q you will tread grapes, but not drink the wine. 16The decrees of Omri are carefully kept, and all the practices of Ahab’s house, \q and you follow their counsels. \q So I will make you a horror and your people an object of scorn, \q and you will bear the disgrace of my people.g
