The oracle concerning Moab

1The oracle concerning Moab. \q In a single night Ar of Moab is stripped bare and silenced; \q in a single night Kir of Moab is stripped bare and silenced. 2Up to the temple they go, and Dibon to the high places, to weep; \q for Nebo and for Medeba Moab wails. \q Every head among them is bald, every beard clipped short. 3They have tied sackcloth on in its streets; \q on its roofs and in its open squares the whole people wails, dissolving in tears. 4Heshbon raises a cry, and Elealeh with it; \q the sound carries as far as Jahaz. \q That is why Moab’s soldiers shout in alarm, \q and Moab shudders to the depths of its being. 5My heart cries out for Moab; \q those fleeing from it reach Zoar and Eglath-shelishiyah. \q Up the climb to Luhith they go, weeping all the way; \q along the road to Horonaim they lift a cry of disaster. 6The waters of Nimrim have turned to waste ground. \q The grass has dried out, the fresh shoots have failed, \q and not a green thing remains. 7That is why they haul away the riches they had amassed \q and the goods they had laid by, \q across the Wadi of the Poplars. 8A cry runs all around the borders of Moab; \q the wailing is heard at Eglaim, \q the wailing is heard at Beer-elim. 9The waters of Dimon are filled with blood, \q and I will add yet more to Dimon’s troubles: \q a lion against the survivors of Moab, \q against whoever is left in the land.
