The sword of the LORD against Leviathan
1On that day the LORD will take his great sword, harsh and strong, and bring it down on Leviathan the serpent in flight, \q on Leviathan the coiling serpent; \q he will kill the monster that lives in the sea.a
A new song of the vineyard
2On that day, \q sing of a vineyard of delight!b 3I, the LORD, am the one who tends it. \q I give it water moment by moment. \q So that no one will do it harm, \q I stand guard over it night and day. 4There is no anger in me. \q If only thorns and briers stood against me in battle! \q I would advance on them and burn them all at once. 5Or else let them take hold of me as their stronghold. \q Let them make peace with me; \q peace with me let them make. 6In the days ahead Jacob will put down roots; \q Israel will flower and send out shoots, \q and they will cover the face of the world with fruit.c
7Has he struck Jacob the way he struck the one who struck him? \q Or has Jacob been slain the way his slayers were slain?d 8In due measure, by sending her away, you contended with her; \q he swept her off with his fierce blast on the day the east wind blew.e 9So by this Jacob’s guilt will be covered over, \q and this is the full harvest that comes from taking his sin away: \q he will make every altar stone like chalk crushed to powder, \q and no Asherah pole or incense altar will be left standing. 10For the walled city sits alone, \q a home left empty and abandoned like the desert. \q Calves graze there; there they lie down and strip its branches bare.f 11When its boughs dry out they snap off, \q and women come and use them to light their fires. \q For these people have no understanding. \q So he who made them will feel no pity for them; he who shaped them will show them no kindness.
Gathered one by one
12On that day the LORD will beat out the grain from the current of the Euphrates down to the Wadi of Egypt, and you will be picked up one at a time, Israelites.g
13On that day a great ram’s horn will sound. Those lost in the land of Assyria will come, with those driven off into the land of Egypt, and they will bow down to the LORD on the holy mountain in Jerusalem.
