David prepares to build the temple
1Then David declared, “Here is the house of the LORD God, and here is the altar of burnt offering for Israel.”
2So David gave orders to gather the outsiders who were living in the land of Israel, and he set stonecutters to cut dressed stones for building the house of God. 3David provided a great deal of iron for nails for the doors of the gates and for clamps, and more bronze than could be weighed. 4There were also cedar logs beyond counting, for the Sidonians and the Tyrians had brought great quantities of cedar to David.
5David said, “Solomon my son is young and inexperienced, and the house that is to be built for the LORD must be made great beyond measure, so that its fame and splendor reach all lands. So let me get things ready for it.” So before his death David laid up materials in great quantity. 6Then he summoned his son Solomon and charged him with building a house for the LORD, the God of Israel.
David’s charge to Solomon
7David said to Solomon, “My son, it was my own desire to build a house for the name of the LORD my God. 8But the word of the LORD came to me: ‘You have poured out blood in great amounts and waged great wars. You will not build a house for my name, because of all the blood you have poured out on the earth in my presence.a 9Look, a son is to be born to you, and he will be a man of rest. I will grant him rest from all the enemies around him. For his name will be Solomon, and in his days I will give Israel peace and quiet.b 10He is the one who will build a house for my name. He will be a son to me, and I will be a father to him, and I will make the throne of his kingdom over Israel firm forever.’ 11Now, my son, may the LORD be with you, so that you prosper as you build the house of the LORD your God, just as he promised concerning you. 12Above all, may the LORD grant you insight and understanding when he sets you over Israel, so that you keep the law of the LORD your God. 13Then you will succeed, if you are careful to carry out the statutes and the rulings that the LORD commanded Moses for Israel. Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or lose heart. 14Look, with hard toil I have provided for the house of the LORD about 7,500,000 pounds of gold and about 75,000,000 pounds of silver, and bronze and iron beyond weighing, there is so much of it. I have also provided timber and stone, and you are to add to them.cd 15You also have workers in great numbers: stonecutters, craftsmen in stone and wood, and every kind of worker skilled for every task. 16The gold and silver, the bronze and iron, are beyond counting. Now get up and go to work, and may the LORD be with you.”e 17Then David ordered all the officials of Israel to help his son Solomon. 18“Is not the LORD your God with you? Has he not given you rest on every side? For he has handed the people who lived in the land over to me, and the land lies subdued before the LORD and before his people. 19Now set your heart and soul on seeking the LORD your God. Get up and build the sanctuary of the LORD God, so that the ark of the covenant of the LORD and the sacred vessels of God can be brought into the house that is to be built for the name of the LORD.”
