1All Israel was enrolled by genealogies, and these are written in the Book of the Kings of Israel. Judah was taken into exile to Babylon because of their unfaithfulness.

The first to settle again in their towns

2The first to settle again on their own property in their towns were Israelites, priests, Levites and temple servants. 3Some of the descendants of Judah, Benjamin, Ephraim and Manasseh lived in Jerusalem: 4From Judah: Uthai son of Ammihud, son of Omri, son of Imri, son of Bani, a descendant of Perez son of Judah. 5From the Shilonites: Asaiah the firstborn and his sons. 6From the descendants of Zerah: Jeuel. Their relatives numbered 690. 7From the descendants of Benjamin: Sallu son of Meshullam, son of Hodaviah, son of Hassenuah, 8Ibneiah son of Jeroham; Elah son of Uzzi, son of Michri; and Meshullam son of Shephatiah, son of Reuel, son of Ibnijah, 9and their relatives, listed by their family records, numbered 956. All these men were heads of families in their ancestral houses.

The priests

10From the priests: Jedaiah, Jehoiarib, Jachin, 11Azariah son of Hilkiah, son of Meshullam, son of Zadok, son of Meraioth, son of Ahitub, the chief officer of the house of God,

12Adaiah son of Jeroham, son of Pashhur, son of Malchijah; Maasai son of Adiel, son of Jahzerah, son of Meshullam, son of Meshillemith, son of Immer; 13and their relatives, heads of their ancestral families, 1,760 in all. They were very capable men for the work of serving in the house of God. 14From the Levites: Shemaiah son of Hasshub, son of Azrikam, son of Hashabiah, a descendant of Merari; 15Bakbakkar, Heresh, Galal; Mattaniah son of Mica, son of Zichri, son of Asaph; 16Obadiah son of Shemaiah, son of Galal, son of Jeduthun; and Berechiah son of Asa, son of Elkanah, who lived in the villages of the Netophathites. 17The gatekeepers were Shallum, Akkub, Talmon and Ahiman. Their kinsman Shallum was the chief, 18and to this day he is stationed at the King’s Gate on the east. These were the gatekeepers of the camps of the Levites. 19Shallum son of Kore, son of Ebiasaph, son of Korah, and his relatives from his father’s family, the Korahites, were in charge of the work of the service as keepers of the thresholds of the tent, just as their ancestors had been in charge of the camp of the LORD as keepers of the entrance. 20Phinehas son of Eleazar had been in charge of them in earlier times, and the LORD was with him. 21Zechariah son of Meshelemiah was gatekeeper at the entrance to the tent of meeting. 22All those chosen to be gatekeepers at the thresholds numbered 212. They were enrolled by genealogy in their villages. It was David and Samuel the seer who had placed them in these posts of trust. 23So they and their descendants were in charge of guarding the gates of the house of the LORD, the house that was the tent. 24The gatekeepers were on all four sides: east, west, north and south. 25Their relatives in their villages had to come in from time to time to serve with them for seven days. 26For the four chief gatekeepers, who were Levites, held a permanent position of trust. They were in charge of the rooms and the treasuries of the house of God. 27They spent the night stationed around the house of God, because they had the duty of guarding it, and they were in charge of the key for opening it every morning. 28Some of them were in charge of the utensils used in the service; they counted them when they brought them in and when they took them out. 29Others were appointed over the furnishings and all the holy utensils of the sanctuary, and over the fine flour, wine, oil, frankincense and spices. 30But some of the priests prepared the blend of the spices. 31Mattithiah, one of the Levites and the firstborn of Shallum the Korahite, was entrusted with baking the flat cakes. 32Some of their relatives, the Kohathites, were in charge of the bread set out in rows, preparing it every Sabbath.

33These are the singers, heads of Levite families, who stayed in the temple rooms and were excused from other tasks, because they were at their work day and night. 34These were heads of Levite families, leaders listed in their family records, and they lived in Jerusalem.
