The end has come
1The word of the LORD came to me: 2Son of man, the Lord GOD says this to the land of Israel: An end! The end has come to the four corners of the land. 3Now the end is upon you. I will unleash my anger against you, judge you by your ways, and bring all your detestable practices down on you. 4I will not look on you with pity or spare you. I will bring your ways down on you, and your detestable practices will remain among you. Then you will know that I am the LORD.
5The Lord GOD says this: Disaster! A disaster unlike any other! See, it is coming!a 6An end has come! The end has come! It has woken up against you. See, it is coming!b 7Doom has come to you who live in the land. The time has come, the day is close at hand: panic on the mountains, not shouts of joy.c 8Very soon I will pour out my wrath on you and spend my anger against you. I will judge you by your ways and bring all your detestable practices down on you. 9I will not look on you with pity or spare you. I will bring your ways down on you, and your detestable practices will remain among you. Then you will know that I am the LORD, the one who strikes. 10See, the day! See, it is coming! Doom has gone out. The rod has blossomed; arrogance has sprouted.d 11Violence has grown into a rod to punish wickedness. None of them will be left, none of their crowds, none of their wealth, and nothing of worth among them.e 12The time has come; the day is here. The buyer should not rejoice, nor the seller grieve, for fierce anger is coming on all its crowds. 13Sellers will not get back what they sold, even if they are still alive, for the vision concerning all its crowds will not be revoked. Because of their sin, not one of them will hold on to life.f 14They have sounded the trumpet and made everything ready, but no one goes out to fight, for my fierce anger is on all its crowds. 15The sword is outside, plague and famine inside. Whoever is in the countryside will die by the sword, and whoever is in the city will be devoured by famine and plague. 16Any who escape will flee to the mountains and be like doves of the valleys, all of them moaning, each over their own sin. 17Every hand will hang limp, and every knee will turn to water.g 18They will put on sackcloth and be covered with terror. Shame will be on every face, and every head will be shaved. 19Their silver they will fling into the streets, and their gold will be something unclean. Their silver and their gold will not be able to save them on the day of the LORD’s fury. It cannot satisfy their hunger or fill their stomachs, for it made them stumble into sin. 20They took pride in their beautiful jewelry and used it to make the images of their detestable practices and their vile idols. Therefore I will make it something unclean to them.h 21I will hand it over as plunder to foreigners and as spoil to the wicked of the earth, and they will profane it. 22I will turn my face away from them, and they will profane my treasured place. Robbers will break into it and defile it.i
Make a chain
23Make a chain! For the land is full of bloodshed, and the city is full of violence.j 24I will bring the most evil of the nations to take over their houses. I will put an end to the pride of the powerful, and their holy places will be defiled. 25Terror is coming! They will look for peace, but there will be none. 26Disaster will follow disaster, and rumor will follow rumor. They will seek a vision from a prophet, but the priest will have no instruction to give, and the elders no counsel. 27The king will mourn, the prince will be clothed in despair, and the hands of the people of the land will shake with fear. I will deal with them according to their ways and judge them by the standards they themselves use. Then they will know that I am the LORD.
