The land of Joseph’s descendants
1The allotment for the descendants of Joseph ran from the Jordan at Jericho, east of the springs of Jericho, through the wilderness that climbs from Jericho up into the hill country to Bethel.a 2From Bethel it goes on to Luz and passes along to Ataroth, in the territory of the Archites. 3Then it goes down westward to the territory of the Japhletites, as far as the territory of Lower Beth-horon, and on to Gezer, and it ends at the sea. 4So the descendants of Joseph, Manasseh and Ephraim, received their inheritance. 5This was the territory of the Ephraimites, clan by clan. The border of their inheritance ran on the east from Ataroth-addar to Upper Beth-horon, 6and out to the sea. From Michmethath on the north the border turns east toward Taanath-shiloh and passes by it on the east to Janoah.b 7From Janoah it goes down to Ataroth and Naarah, reaches Jericho, and comes out at the Jordan. 8From Tappuah the border goes west along the Wadi Kanah and ends at the sea. This is the inheritance of the Ephraimite tribe, clan by clan, 9together with the towns set apart for the Ephraimites within the inheritance of the Manassites, all those towns and their villages. 10But they did not drive out the Canaanites living in Gezer, and so Canaanites have lived among the Ephraimites to this day, though they were made to work as forced laborers.c
