Abijah king of Judah
1In the eighteenth year of King Jeroboam, Abijah became king over Judah.a 2He reigned three years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Micaiah daughter of Uriel of Gibeah. There was war between Abijah and Jeroboam.b 3Abijah went into battle with an army of warriors, 400,000 chosen men, and Jeroboam drew up his battle lines against him with 800,000 chosen men, mighty warriors.
Abijah’s speech on Mount Zemaraim
4Abijah stood up on Mount Zemaraim, in the hill country of Ephraim, and said, “Listen to me, Jeroboam and all Israel! 5Should you not know that the LORD, the God of Israel, gave the kingship over Israel to David and his sons forever by a covenant of salt?
6Yet Jeroboam son of Nebat, an official of Solomon son of David, rose and turned in revolt against his own master. 7Worthless men, scoundrels, gathered around him and stood firm against Rehoboam son of Solomon, when Rehoboam was young and timid and could not hold his own against them. 8And now you mean to stand against the kingdom of the LORD that David’s sons hold. You are a vast horde, and with you are the golden calves Jeroboam made to be your gods. 9Did you not drive out the priests of the LORD, Aaron’s sons, together with the Levites, and make your own priests as the peoples of other lands do? Anyone who comes to consecrate himself with a young bull and seven rams becomes a priest of what are no gods.
10But we have the LORD as our God, and we have not forsaken him. Sons of Aaron serve the LORD as priests, and the Levites are at their work. 11Every morning and every evening they burn burnt offerings and fragrant incense to the LORD. The bread is set out in rows on the pure table, and the lamps on the golden lampstand are lit every evening. For we are keeping the charge of the LORD our God, but you have forsaken him. 12Look, God is with us at our head, and his priests are here with their trumpets to sound the battle call against you. Israelites, do not fight against the LORD, the God of your ancestors, for you will not succeed.” 13Meanwhile Jeroboam had sent an ambush around to come up behind them, so that his army was in front of Judah and the ambush was behind them. 14When Judah turned, they saw that the battle was in front of them and behind them. They cried out to the LORD, and the priests blew the trumpets. 15Then the men of Judah raised the battle cry. And as they shouted, God struck down Jeroboam and all Israel before Abijah and Judah. 16The Israelites fled before Judah, and God gave them into Judah’s hands. 17Abijah and his troops struck them with a great slaughter, and 500,000 chosen men of Israel fell dead. 18So the Israelites were humbled at that time, and the men of Judah won the day, because they relied on the LORD, the God of their ancestors. 19Abijah pursued Jeroboam and took towns from him: Bethel and the villages around it, Jeshanah and its villages, and Ephron and its villages.c 20Jeroboam did not regain his power during the days of Abijah. The LORD struck him, and he died.
The end of Abijah’s reign
21But Abijah grew strong. He took fourteen wives and had twenty-two sons and sixteen daughters.
22The rest of the acts of Abijah, his ways and his words, are written in the commentary of the prophet Iddo.d 23Then Abijah rested with his ancestors and was buried in the City of David. His son Asa became king in his place. In his days the land had peace for ten years.e
