The last kings of Judah

1The people of the land then took Jehoahaz son of Josiah and made him king in Jerusalem to succeed his father. 2Jehoahaz was twenty-three years old when he became king, and he reigned three months in Jerusalem. 3The king of Egypt removed him from the throne in Jerusalem and imposed on the land a payment of about 7,500 pounds of silver and about 75 pounds of gold. 4The king of Egypt made Eliakim, the brother of Jehoahaz, king over Judah and Jerusalem, and changed Eliakim’s name to Jehoiakim. But Neco took Jehoahaz, Eliakim’s brother, and brought him to Egypt.

5Jehoiakim was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned eleven years in Jerusalem. He did what was evil in the sight of the LORD his God. 6Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came up against him and put him in bronze chains to take him off to Babylon. 7Nebuchadnezzar also carried off to Babylon some of the vessels from the house of the LORD and placed them in his temple there. 8The rest of the acts of Jehoiakim, the detestable things he did and what was found against him, are written in the Book of the Kings of Israel and Judah. His son Jehoiachin became king in his place.

9Jehoiachin was eight years old when he became king, and he reigned three months and ten days in Jerusalem. He did what was evil in the sight of the LORD. 10In the spring of the year King Nebuchadnezzar sent for him and brought him to Babylon, along with the precious vessels of the house of the LORD. He made Jehoiachin’s relative Zedekiah king over Judah and Jerusalem.

The fall of Jerusalem

11Zedekiah was twenty-one years old when he became king, and he reigned eleven years in Jerusalem. 12He did what was evil in the sight of the LORD his God. He did not humble himself before Jeremiah the prophet, who spoke the word that came from the LORD. 13He also rebelled against King Nebuchadnezzar, who had made him swear an oath by God. He stiffened his neck and hardened his heart, and would not turn to the LORD, the God of Israel. 14In the same way all the leaders of the priests and the people were more and more unfaithful, following all the detestable practices of the nations, and they defiled the house of the LORD that he had set apart as holy in Jerusalem. 15The LORD, the God of their ancestors, sent word to them through his messengers again and again, because he felt compassion for his people and for his dwelling place. 16But they made fun of God’s messengers, scorned his words and sneered at his prophets, until the fury of the LORD rose up against his people and nothing could heal them. 17So he brought the king of the Chaldeans against them, and the king put their young men to the sword in their own sanctuary. He had no compassion on young man or young woman, on the old or the frail. God gave them all into his hand. 18He carried to Babylon all the vessels of the house of God, large and small, the treasures of the house of the LORD, and the treasures belonging to the king and his officials. 19They burned the house of God and tore down the wall of Jerusalem. They burned all its palaces with fire and destroyed all its precious things.

20He carried into exile to Babylon those who had escaped the sword, and they became servants to him and to his sons until the kingdom of Persia came to power, 21to fulfill the word of the LORD spoken by Jeremiah, until the land had enjoyed its Sabbaths. All the days that it lay desolate it kept Sabbath, until seventy years were complete.

The decree of Cyrus

22In the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, so that the word of the LORD spoken by Jeremiah would be fulfilled, the LORD stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia, and he had a proclamation announced throughout his kingdom and also put it in writing:

23“Cyrus king of Persia says this: The LORD, the God of heaven, has given me all the kingdoms of the earth, and he has appointed me to build a house for him at Jerusalem, which is in Judah. Whoever among you is one of his people, may the LORD their God be with them, and let them go up.”
