A letter to the people in exile

1This is the text of the letter Jeremiah the prophet sent from Jerusalem to the elders who were left among the exiles, to the priests and the prophets, and to all the people Nebuchadnezzar had carried into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon, 2after King Jeconiah, the queen mother, the court officers, the officials of Judah and Jerusalem, and the craftsmen and smiths had gone from Jerusalem into exile, 3sending it by Elasah son of Shaphan and Gemariah son of Hilkiah. Zedekiah king of Judah had sent these two men to Babylon, to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon. The letter said:

4“The LORD of Armies, the God of Israel, says this to all the exiles whom I sent into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon: 5Build houses and settle down in them. Plant gardens and eat what they produce. 6Marry and have sons and daughters. Find wives for your sons and give your daughters to husbands, so that they in turn have sons and daughters. Increase in number there; do not decrease. 7Seek the peace of the city where I have sent you as exiles, and pray to the LORD for it, since your own peace depends on its peace.

8For the LORD of Armies, the God of Israel, says this: Do not let the prophets and the diviners who are among you deceive you, and do not listen to the dreams that you urge them to dream. 9For they are prophesying lies to you in my name. I did not send them, declares the LORD.

10For the LORD says this: When Babylon’s seventy years have been completed, I will come to your aid. I will keep my good promise to you and bring you back to this place. 11For I know well what I have planned for you, declares the LORD. I have planned peace for you, not disaster, so as to give you a future and a hope. 12Then you will call on me; you will come and pray to me, and I will hear you. 13You will seek me and you will find me, when you search for me with all your heart. 14I will let you find me, declares the LORD. I will restore your fortunes and gather you from all the nations and all the places where I have driven you, declares the LORD, and I will bring you back to the place from which I sent you into exile. 15You have been saying, ‘The LORD has raised up prophets for us here in Babylon.’

16But the LORD says this about the king who sits on David’s throne and about all the people who live in this city, your brothers and sisters who did not go with you into exile: 17The LORD of Armies says this: I am about to send the sword, famine and plague against them, and I will make them like rotten figs, so bad that they cannot be eaten. 18I will pursue them with sword, famine and plague, and I will make them a horror to every kingdom on earth. Among all the nations where I have driven them, they will be a name used in curses, a thing that appalls, an object of scorn and a disgrace, 19because they have not listened to my words, declares the LORD, the words I sent them through my servants the prophets, again and again. And you did not listen either, declares the LORD. 20But you, all you exiles whom I sent away from Jerusalem to Babylon, hear the word of the LORD.

21The LORD of Armies, the God of Israel, says this about Ahab son of Kolaiah and about Zedekiah son of Maaseiah, who are prophesying lies to you in my name: I am about to hand them over to Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, and he will put them to death before your eyes. 22Their fate will become a curse that all the exiles of Judah in Babylon will use: ‘May the LORD make you like Zedekiah and Ahab, the men the king of Babylon roasted alive in the fire,’ 23because they have done a disgraceful thing in Israel. They have committed adultery with their neighbors’ wives and have spoken lies in my name, words I did not command them to speak. I am the one who knows it, and I am witness to it, declares the LORD.”

A message for Shemaiah

24“To Shemaiah the Nehelamite you are to say: 25‘The LORD of Armies, the God of Israel, says this: You sent letters in your own name to all the people in Jerusalem, to Zephaniah son of Maaseiah the priest and to all the priests. You wrote: 26“The LORD has made you priest in place of Jehoiada the priest, so that there would be officers in the house of the LORD to deal with any madman who sets himself up as a prophet. You should put such a man in the stocks and the neck irons. 27So why have you not rebuked Jeremiah of Anathoth, who sets himself up as a prophet among you? 28For he has even sent word to us in Babylon, saying, ‘It will be a long time. Build houses and settle down in them. Plant gardens and eat what they produce.’”’” 29Zephaniah the priest read this letter aloud to Jeremiah the prophet.

30Then the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah: 31“Send this message to all the exiles: ‘The LORD says this about Shemaiah the Nehelamite: Because Shemaiah has prophesied to you, although I did not send him, and has led you to trust in a lie, 32therefore the LORD says this: I am about to punish Shemaiah the Nehelamite and his descendants. No one of his line will be left living among this people, and he will not see the good that I am going to do for my people, declares the LORD, because he has preached rebellion against the LORD.’”
