Elisha promises food
1Elisha said, “Listen to the word of the LORD. The LORD says this: ‘About this time tomorrow, about 7 quarts of fine flour will sell for about 2/5 ounce of silver, and about 13 quarts of barley for about 2/5 ounce of silver, at the gate of Samaria.’”a 2The officer whose arm the king leaned on replied to the man of God, “Even if the LORD were to make floodgates in the heavens, could this really happen?” Elisha replied, “With your own eyes you will see it happen, but you will not eat any of it.”
Four men find the camp deserted
3Now there were four men with a serious skin disease at the entrance to the city gate. They said to one another, “Why are we sitting here waiting to die?”b 4“If we say, ‘Let us go into the city,’ the famine is there, and we will die there. If we stay here, we will die. So come, let us go over to the Aramean camp and surrender. If they spare us, we will live; if they kill us, we will die.” 5So at dusk they got up and set out for the Aramean camp. But when they reached the edge of the camp, there was no one there at all. 6The Lord had made the Aramean army hear the sound of chariots and horses, the sound of a great army, and they said to one another, “Look, the king of Israel has hired the kings of the Hittites and the kings of Egypt to attack us!” 7So they got up and ran away at dusk, abandoning their tents, their horses and their donkeys. They left the camp just as it was and ran for their lives. 8When these men with the skin disease reached the edge of the camp, they went into one tent and ate and drank. They carried off silver, gold and clothing from it and went and hid them. Then they came back, went into another tent, carried off things from there too, and went and hid them. 9Then they said to one another, “What we are doing is not right. This is a day of good news, and we are keeping it to ourselves. If we wait until daylight, punishment will catch up with us. Come, let us go and report this to the king’s household.” 10So they came back and called out to the gatekeepers of the city and told them, “We went to the Aramean camp, and there was no one there, not a human voice to be heard. There were only horses tied up and donkeys tied up, and the tents left just as they were.” 11The gatekeepers shouted the news, and it was reported inside the king’s palace. 12The king got up in the night and said to his officials, “I will explain to you what the Arameans have done to us. They know that we are starving, and they have left their camp to hide out in the countryside. They are thinking, ‘When they come out of the city, we will capture them alive and get into the city.’” 13One of his officials answered, “Have some men take five of the horses still left in the city. Whatever happens to them, they are only like the rest of the people of Israel who are left here, like all the people of Israel who have already perished. Let us send them and see.”c 14So they took two chariots with their horses, and the king sent them after the Aramean army with the order, “Go and find out.” 15They followed them as far as the Jordan, and the whole road was strewn with clothing and gear that the Arameans had flung away as they fled in haste. The messengers came back and reported to the king. 16Then the people went out and plundered the Aramean camp. So about 7 quarts of fine flour sold for about 2/5 ounce of silver, and about 13 quarts of barley for about 2/5 ounce of silver, just as the LORD had said. 17Now the king had put the officer on whose arm he leaned in charge of the gate. In the gateway the people trampled him, and he died, as the man of God had foretold when the king came down to him. 18For when the man of God told the king, “About 13 quarts of barley will sell for about 2/5 ounce of silver, and about 7 quarts of fine flour for about 2/5 ounce of silver, about this time tomorrow at the gate of Samaria,” 19the officer had answered the man of God, “Even if the LORD were to make floodgates in the heavens, could such a thing happen?” And Elisha had replied, “With your own eyes you will see it happen, but you will not eat any of it.” 20And that is exactly how it ended for him: in the gateway the people trampled him, and he died.
