Jeremiah is not to marry
1The word of the LORD came to me: 2“Do not marry, and do not have sons or daughters in this place. 3For the LORD says this about the sons and daughters who are born in this place, about the mothers who give birth to them, and about the fathers who bring them into the world in this land: 4They will die of wasting diseases. No one will mourn them or bury them; they will lie like dung on the surface of the ground. Sword and famine will finish them off, and their dead bodies will become food for the birds of the sky and for the wild animals.
5For the LORD says this: Do not go into a house where a funeral meal is being held. Do not go there to mourn or to show them sympathy, for I have withdrawn my peace from this people, declares the LORD, my loyal love and my compassion. 6Great and small alike will die in this land. They will not be buried, no one will mourn for them, and no one will gash their body or shave their head for them. 7No one will break bread for the mourners to comfort them for the dead, and no one will give them the cup of consolation to drink for a father or a mother.a 8And do not go into a house where there is feasting, to sit with them and eat and drink.
9For the LORD of Armies, the God of Israel, says this: Before your eyes and in your own lifetime, I am going to silence in this place the sounds of joy and gladness, the voices of bridegroom and bride. 10When you report all these words to this people, they will ask you, ‘Why has the LORD announced this whole great disaster against us? What is our guilt, and what sin have we committed against the LORD our God?’ 11Then you are to say to them, ‘It is because your ancestors abandoned me, declares the LORD. They followed other gods, served them and bowed down to them. They abandoned me and did not keep my instruction. 12And you yourselves have behaved even worse than your ancestors. Look, each of you follows the stubbornness of your own evil heart and refuses to listen to me. 13So I will hurl you out of this land into a land unknown to you and to your ancestors. There you will serve other gods by day and by night, because I will show you no favor.’
Brought back from the north
14Therefore, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when it will no longer be said, ‘As surely as the LORD lives, who brought up the Israelites from the land of Egypt,’ 15but, ‘As surely as the LORD lives, who brought up the Israelites from the land of the north and from all the lands where he had driven them.’ I will bring them back to their own land, which I gave to their ancestors.
16Look, I am about to summon many fishermen, declares the LORD, and they will catch them. Then afterward I will summon many hunters, and they will hunt them down from every mountain, every hill and the cracks in the rocks.b 17For my eyes are on every path they take. They are not hidden from me, and their guilt is not concealed from my sight. 18First I will repay them double for their guilt and their sin, because they have defiled my land with the lifeless corpses of their detestable idols and filled my inheritance with their abominations.”c
The nations will come
19LORD, my strength, my fortress, my refuge on the day of trouble, \q to you the nations will come from the ends of the earth \q and say, “Our ancestors inherited nothing but lies, \q worthless idols that did them no good at all.” 20Can people make gods for themselves? \q Such things are not gods at all! 21Therefore I am going to teach them; \q this time I will make my power and my might known to them, \q and they will know that my name is the LORD.
