Babylon captures Jerusalem
1In the tenth month of the ninth year of the reign of Zedekiah king of Judah, Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon advanced on Jerusalem with his whole army, and they laid siege to it.
2In the fourth month of Zedekiah’s eleventh year, on the ninth day of the month, the city wall was breached. 3Then all the officials of the king of Babylon came in and took their seats in the Middle Gate: Nergal-sharezer, Samgar-nebu, Sarsekim the chief of the court officials, Nergal-sharezer the Rab-mag, and all the other officials of the king of Babylon.a 4When Zedekiah king of Judah and all the soldiers caught sight of them, they fled. They went out of the city at night, taking the road by the king’s garden, through the gate between the two walls, and the king went off toward the Arabah.b 5But the Chaldean army chased them and caught up with Zedekiah in the plains of Jericho. They seized him and took him up to Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon at Riblah in the land of Hamath, and there the king passed sentence on him. 6At Riblah the king of Babylon slaughtered Zedekiah’s sons while he watched; the king of Babylon also slaughtered all the nobles of Judah. 7Then he put out Zedekiah’s eyes and bound him in bronze fetters to take him to Babylon. 8The Chaldeans burned down the king’s palace and the houses of the people, and they tore down the walls of Jerusalem.c 9Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard carried into exile to Babylon the rest of the people who were left in the city, those who had deserted to him, and the rest of the people who remained. 10But Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard left in the land of Judah some of the poor people who owned nothing, and at that time he gave them vineyards and fields. 11Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon had given orders about Jeremiah through Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard, saying, 12“Take him and look after him. Do him no harm, but do for him whatever he asks of you.” 13So Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard, Nebushazban the chief of the court officials, Nergal-sharezer the Rab-mag and all the king of Babylon’s chief officers sent word, 14and had Jeremiah brought from the court of the guard. They entrusted him to Gedaliah son of Ahikam son of Shaphan, to take him home, and he stayed among the people.d
A promise for Ebed-melech
15The word of the LORD had come to Jeremiah while he was confined in the court of the guard: 16“Go and tell Ebed-melech the Cushite, ‘The LORD of Armies, the God of Israel, says this: Look, I am about to carry out my words against this city, for disaster and not for good. On that day you will see them come true. 17But I will rescue you on that day, declares the LORD; you will not be handed over to the men you are afraid of. 18I will certainly rescue you; you will not fall by the sword. You will come away with your life as your plunder, because you have trusted in me, declares the LORD.’”
