Jeremiah is lowered into a cistern
Shephatiah son of Mattan, Gedaliah son of Pashhur, Jucal son of Shelemiah and Pashhur son of Malchiah heard what Jeremiah was saying to all the people:
“The LORD says this: ‘Those who stay in this city will die by sword, famine and plague. But those who go out to the Chaldeans will live; they will come away with their lives as their only plunder, and they will live.’
The LORD says this: ‘This city will certainly be handed over to the king of Babylon’s army, and he will capture it.’” 4Then the officials said to the king, “This man must be put to death. By saying such things he is weakening the resolve of the soldiers who are left in this city, and of all the people as well. This man is not seeking the good of this people, but their harm.” 5King Zedekiah said, “Very well, he is in your hands. The king can do nothing to oppose you.” 6So they took Jeremiah and threw him into the cistern of Malchiah, the king’s son, in the courtyard of the guard. They let him down with ropes. There was no water in the cistern, only mud, and Jeremiah sank down into the mud.
Ebed-melech the Cushite, a court officer in the king’s palace, heard that they had put Jeremiah into the cistern. At the time the king was sitting at the Benjamin Gate.a 8So Ebed-melech went out of the palace and spoke to the king: 9“My lord the king, these men have acted wickedly in everything they have done to Jeremiah the prophet. They have thrown him into the cistern, and he will die there of hunger, for there is no bread left in the city.” 10Then the king gave Ebed-melech the Cushite this order: “Take thirty men with you from here, and pull Jeremiah the prophet up from the cistern before he dies.”b 11So Ebed-melech went into the palace with the men, to a room beneath the storehouse. He took some old rags and worn-out clothes from there and let them down on ropes to Jeremiah in the cistern. 12Ebed-melech the Cushite said to Jeremiah, “Put these old rags and worn-out clothes under your armpits, between you and the ropes.” Jeremiah did so. 13Then they drew Jeremiah up by the ropes and brought him out of the cistern, and Jeremiah stayed in the courtyard of the guard.
Zedekiah questions Jeremiah again
King Zedekiah sent for Jeremiah the prophet and had him brought to him at the third entrance of the house of the LORD. The king said to Jeremiah, “I am going to ask you something. Do not hide anything from me.” 15Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, “If I tell you, will you not certainly have me put to death? And if I give you advice, you will not listen to me.” 16But King Zedekiah swore an oath to Jeremiah in secret: “As surely as the LORD lives, who gave us this life, I will not put you to death, and I will not hand you over to these men who want to kill you.”
Then Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, “The LORD, the God of Armies, the God of Israel, says this: ‘If you will surrender to the commanders of the king of Babylon, your life will be spared, and this city will not be burned down. You and your family will live. 18But if you do not surrender to the commanders of the king of Babylon, this city will be handed over to the Chaldeans, and they will burn it down. And you yourself will not escape from them.’”
King Zedekiah said to Jeremiah, “I am afraid of the Judeans who have deserted to the Chaldeans. They may hand me over to them, and they will treat me cruelly.”
Jeremiah said, “They will not hand you over. Please obey the LORD’s voice in what I am telling you. Then it will go well with you, and your life will be spared. 21But if you refuse to surrender, this is what the LORD has shown me: 22Look, all the women who are left in the palace of the king of Judah are being led out to the commanders of the king of Babylon, \q and they are saying, ‘Your trusted friends \q have misled you and overpowered you; \q now your feet are sunk in the mud, \q they have turned their backs on you.’ 23All your wives and your children will be led out to the Chaldeans, and you yourself will not escape from them. You will be captured by the king of Babylon, and you will be the cause of this city being burned down.”c
Then Zedekiah said to Jeremiah, “Do not let anyone know about this conversation, and you will not die. 25If the officials hear that I have talked with you, and they come and say to you, ‘Tell us what you said to the king and what the king said to you. Do not hide anything from us, and we will not put you to death,’ 26then say to them, ‘I was presenting my plea to the king not to send me back to the house of Jonathan to die there.’”
All the officials came to Jeremiah and questioned him, and he answered them with the very words the king had told him to say. So they stopped questioning him, for no one had overheard the conversation.
So Jeremiah stayed in the courtyard of the guard until the day Jerusalem fell. This is what happened when Jerusalem was captured:
