Found by those who did not seek
1I made myself available to those who did not ask; \q I let myself be found by people who were not looking for me. \q “Here I am, here I am,” I said \q to a nation that did not bear my name.ab 2The whole day through I stretched out my hands to a defiant people, \q who go along a road that is no good, \q wherever their own plans lead them, 3a people who are always angering me, right before my face; \q they sacrifice in gardens \q and burn incense on bricks, 4who sit among the tombs \q and spend the night in hidden spots, \q who eat the meat of pigs, \q with a stew of foul meat in their pots,c 5who say, “Keep your distance; \q do not come close to me, for I am holier than you.” \q These people are smoke in my nose, \q a fire that burns on all day long.d 6Look, it is on record before me. \q I will not stay silent; instead I will repay, \q repaying them straight into their laps, 7for your guilt and the guilt of your ancestors as well, says the LORD. \q They made offerings smoke on the mountains \q and mocked me on the hills, \q so I will measure out what their past deeds have earned and pour it into their laps.e
The blessing in the cluster
8The LORD says this: As long as new wine can be found in a bunch of grapes, \q people say, “Leave it whole, for there is blessing in it.” \q I will do the same for my servants’ sake: \q I will not destroy everything. 9From Jacob I will bring out a line of descendants, \q and from Judah people to inherit my mountains. \q My chosen ones will take possession of it, and my servants will make their home there. 10The plain of Sharon will become grazing land for sheep and goats, \q and the Valley of Achor a place where herds lie down, \q for my people who have sought me. 11But you who turn away from the LORD, \q who have forgotten my holy mountain, \q who lay a table for Gad \q and fill cups of mixed wine for Meni,f 12I will mark you out for the sword, and all of you will kneel down to be slaughtered. \q When I called, you gave no answer; \q when I spoke, you paid no attention. \q You did what is evil in my sight \q and chose the very things I take no pleasure in.
Joy for God’s servants in a new creation
13So the Lord GOD says this: See, my servants will eat while you go hungry. \q See, my servants will drink while you are thirsty. \q See, my servants will be glad while you hang your heads in shame. 14See, my servants will sing out from hearts full of gladness, \q but you will cry out from hearts full of pain \q and wail because your spirits are crushed. 15Your name will live on only as a curse on the lips of my chosen ones, \q and the Lord GOD will put you to death; \q but he will call his servants by a different name,g 16so that anyone in the land who prays for blessing will pray by the God of Amen, \q and anyone in the land who swears an oath will swear it by the God of Amen. \q The old troubles will be forgotten; \q they will be hidden from my sight. 17Look, I am about to create new heavens and a new earth. \q The things of the past will not be remembered; \q no one will even think of them again. 18Instead, be joyful and celebrate for all time over what I am creating. \q For look, I am creating Jerusalem to be pure gladness, and its people to be pure joy. 19I will be glad over Jerusalem and delight in my people. \q No sound of weeping, no cry for help, will be heard in it again. 20There will be no more babies there who live just a few days, \q and no old people who fail to complete their years. \q Someone who dies at 100 will die as a youth, \q and one who falls short of 100 will be held to be under a curse.h 21They will build houses and settle in them, \q plant vineyards and enjoy their grapes. 22They will not build for others to live in, \q or plant for others to eat. \q The lifetime of my people will be like the lifetime of a tree, \q and my chosen ones will use the work of their own hands to the very end. 23Their work will not be wasted, \q nor will they bring children into the world for sudden ruin; \q for they are the offspring of those the LORD has blessed, \q and their own children with them. 24It will happen that I answer them before they call, \q and hear them while the words are still on their lips. 25Wolf and lamb will graze side by side, the lion will eat straw as the ox does, \q and the snake will live on dust. \q None will hurt and none will destroy anywhere on my holy mountain, says the LORD.
