Where is your mother’s divorce document?
1The LORD says this: Where is the certificate of divorce I gave your mother when I sent her away? \q Or was it to one of my creditors that I handed you over in payment? \q No, it was for your own guilt that you were sold, \q and for your rebellions that your mother was sent away. 2When I came, why was no one there? When I called, why did no one reply? \q Is my hand so short that it cannot ransom, \q or do I lack the power to rescue? \q With a single rebuke I drain the sea dry and turn rivers into wasteland. \q Their fish rot where the water has gone, and they perish from thirst. 3I dress the skies in black \q and wrap them in sackcloth like a cloak.
The servant who listens and does not turn back
4The Lord GOD has given me the tongue of one who is taught, \q so that I know how to bear up the weary with a word. \q Each morning he rouses me; \q he rouses my ear to listen as a learner listens.a 5The Lord GOD has opened my ear, \q and I have not resisted; \q I have not turned away and gone back. 6I let those who struck me have my back, \q and those who tore at my beard have my cheeks. \q I did not turn my face away from insult and spit. 7The Lord GOD is my help, \q so disgrace has not overcome me. \q That is why I have made my face like flint, \q and I know I will not be put to shame. 8The one who will declare me in the right is close at hand. \q Who will take me to court? Let us stand up side by side. \q Who has a case against me? Let him step forward and face me. 9Yes, the Lord GOD stands by me; \q who then can pronounce me guilty? \q All of them will fall apart like worn-out clothes, \q and the moth will devour them. 10Who among you fears the LORD and listens to the voice of his servant? \q Let the one who walks in darkness, with no glimmer of light, \q trust in the name of the LORD and lean on his God.b 11But all of you who light a fire and arm yourselves with blazing torches, \q go on, walk by the glare of your own fire, among the torches you have set alight! \q From my hand you will receive this: \q you will lie down in agony.
