Fire at Taberah, and craving for meat

1Now the people began complaining about their hardships in the hearing of the LORD. When the LORD heard it, his anger flared up, and fire from the LORD broke out among them and burned up part of the outer edge of the camp. 2The people cried out to Moses, and Moses prayed to the LORD, and the fire died down. 3So that place was named Taberah, because the fire of the LORD had burned among them. 4The mixed crowd among them was seized by craving, and the Israelites began to weep again too. They said, “If only we had meat to eat! 5We remember the fish we used to eat in Egypt at no cost, and the cucumbers, the melons, the leeks, the onions and the garlic. 6But now we are wasting away. There is nothing at all, and all we ever see is this manna!” 7The manna was like coriander seed, and it looked like bdellium. 8The people went around gathering it. They ground it with millstones or crushed it in a mortar, then boiled it in a pot and made it into cakes. It tasted like pastry baked with olive oil. 9Whenever the dew settled on the camp at night, the manna came down with it. 10Moses heard the people weeping, family by family, everyone at the entrance of their tent. The LORD became very angry, and Moses was deeply troubled. 11Moses said to the LORD, “Why have you brought this trouble on your servant? Why do I find no favor with you, that you load me with the burden of this whole people? 12Was it I who conceived this whole people? Was it I who gave birth to them, so that you tell me, ‘Hold them close and carry them, as a guardian carries a nursing baby,’ all the way to the land you promised on oath to their ancestors? 13Where could I find meat for this whole people? They keep crying to me, ‘Give us meat to eat!’ 14I cannot carry this whole people on my own. The load is too heavy for me. 15If you are going to deal with me like this, then put me to death at once, if I have found favor with you, and spare me from seeing my own ruin.”

Seventy elders share the Spirit

16The LORD said to Moses, “Bring together for me seventy of Israel’s elders, men you know to be elders and officers among the people. Bring them to the tent of meeting and have them take their stand there with you. 17I will come down and speak with you there. I will take some of the Spirit that rests on you and place it on them. Then they will share the burden of the people with you, so that you will not have to carry it alone. 18And tell the people, ‘Consecrate yourselves for tomorrow, and you will eat meat. You have wailed in the hearing of the LORD, “If only we had meat to eat! We were better off in Egypt!” So the LORD will give you meat, and you will eat it. 19You will eat it not for one day, or two days, or five, or ten, or twenty days, 20but for a full month, until it pours out of your noses and turns your stomachs. For you have rejected the LORD, who is among you, and you have wailed before him, “Why did we ever leave Egypt?”’” 21But Moses said, “I am among a people of 600,000 men on foot, and yet you say, ‘I will give them meat, and they will eat it for a whole month!’ 22If flocks and herds were slaughtered for them, would they have enough? If all the fish in the sea were caught for them, would they have enough?”

Is the reach of the LORD too short?

23The LORD said to Moses, “Is the reach of the LORD too short? Now you will see whether my word comes about for you or not.” 24So Moses went out and told the people what the LORD had said. He gathered seventy men from the elders of the people and had them stand around the tent. 25Then the LORD came down in the cloud and spoke to him. He took some of the Spirit that was on Moses and put it on the seventy elders. As soon as the Spirit rested on them, they prophesied, but they did not do so again. 26Two men, however, had stayed behind in the camp, one named Eldad and the other Medad. The Spirit rested on them too. They were among those listed, but they had not gone out to the tent, and they prophesied in the camp. 27A young man ran and told Moses, “Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp!” 28Joshua son of Nun, who had served as Moses’ assistant since he was young, spoke up: “My lord Moses, stop them!” 29But Moses said to him, “Are you being jealous on my behalf? If only the LORD would put his Spirit on all his people and make every one of them a prophet!” 30Then Moses and the elders of Israel went back to the camp. 31Then a wind went out from the LORD. It swept quail in from the sea and brought them down beside the camp, for about a day’s walk in one direction and a day’s walk in the other, all around the camp, about 3 feet above the ground. 32The people were up all that day, all night and all the next day gathering the quail. The one who gathered least gathered about 60 bushels. They spread them out for themselves all around the camp. 33While the meat was still between their teeth, before it had been chewed, the anger of the LORD flared up against the people, and the LORD struck them with a terrible plague. 34So that place was named Kibroth-hattaavah, because there they buried the people who had craved. 35From Kibroth-hattaavah the people moved on to Hazeroth, and they stayed at Hazeroth.
