Not because you are righteous
1Hear, Israel: today you are about to cross the Jordan, to go in and drive out nations greater and stronger than you, with great cities fortified up to the sky, 2a people strong and tall, the Anakim. You know about them, and you have heard it said, ‘Who can stand up to the descendants of Anak?’ 3So understand today that the LORD your God is the one who goes across ahead of you like a consuming fire. He will destroy them and bring them down before you, and you will drive them out and wipe them out quickly, as the LORD promised you. 4When the LORD your God has pushed them out of your way, do not tell yourself, ‘It is because I am righteous that the LORD has brought me in to take possession of this land.’ No, it is because of the wickedness of these nations that the LORD is driving them out before you. 5It is not because you are righteous or because your heart is upright that you are going in to take possession of their land. It is because of the wickedness of these nations that the LORD your God is driving them out before you, and to keep the promise that the LORD made on oath to your ancestors, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. 6Understand, then, that it is not because you are righteous that the LORD your God is giving you this good land to possess, for you are a stiff-necked people. 7Remember this and never forget it: how you made the LORD your God angry in the wilderness. From the day you left the land of Egypt until you arrived here, you have kept on rebelling against the LORD. 8Even at Horeb you provoked the LORD to anger, and the LORD was so angry with you that he was ready to destroy you. 9When I went up the mountain to receive the stone tablets, the tablets of the covenant that the LORD made with you, I stayed on the mountain forty days and forty nights without eating food or drinking water. 10The LORD gave me the two stone tablets written by the finger of God. On them were all the words the LORD had spoken to you on the mountain out of the fire, on the day of the assembly. 11At the end of the forty days and forty nights, the LORD gave me the two stone tablets, the tablets of the covenant. 12Then the LORD said to me, ‘Get up and go down from here at once, because your people whom you brought out of Egypt have become corrupt. They have been quick to turn from the way I commanded them; they have made themselves an idol of cast metal.’ 13The LORD also said to me, ‘I have seen this people, and they are indeed a stiff-necked people. 14Leave me alone, so that I can destroy them and wipe out their name from under heaven. Then I will make you into a nation stronger and larger than they are.’ 15So I turned and went down from the mountain while it was blazing with fire, with the two tablets of the covenant in my hands. 16I looked, and there it was: you had sinned against the LORD your God. You had made yourselves a calf cast in metal. You had been quick to turn from the way the LORD had commanded you. 17So I seized the two tablets, threw them down from my hands, and smashed them before your eyes. 18Then I lay face down before the LORD as I had the first time, for forty days and forty nights, without eating food or drinking water, because of all the sin you had committed by doing what was evil in the sight of the LORD and provoking him to anger.a 19I was terrified of the anger and fury the LORD felt against you, enough to destroy you. But the LORD listened to me that time too. 20The LORD was angry enough with Aaron to destroy him, and at that time I prayed for Aaron as well. 21Then I took the sinful thing you had made, the calf, and burned it in the fire. I crushed it and ground it thoroughly until it was as fine as dust, and I threw the dust into the stream that flows down the mountain. 22At Taberah, at Massah, and at Kibroth-hattaavah you also made the LORD angry. 23And when the LORD sent you out from Kadesh-barnea and said, ‘Go up and take possession of the land I have given you,’ you rebelled against the command of the LORD your God. You did not trust him or obey him. 24You have been rebelling against the LORD from the day I first knew you.b 25So I lay face down before the LORD those forty days and forty nights, because the LORD had said he would destroy you. 26I prayed to the LORD and said, ‘Lord GOD, do not destroy your people, your own inheritance, whom you redeemed by your great power and brought out of Egypt with a mighty hand. 27Remember your servants Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Do not look at the stubbornness of this people, or at their wickedness and their sin, 28Otherwise the people of the land you brought us out of will say, “Because the LORD could not bring them into the land he had promised them, and because he hated them, he led them out to kill them in the wilderness.” 29Yet they are your people, your inheritance, whom you brought out by your great power and your outstretched arm.’
