Joshua to go before the people
1Then Moses went and spoke these words to all Israel.a 2He said to them, “I am 120 years old today. I can no longer go out and come in before you, and the LORD has told me, ‘You will not cross this Jordan.’ 3The LORD your God himself is the one who will cross over before you. He will wipe out these nations in your path, and you will drive them out. Joshua too will cross over at your head, as the LORD has said. 4The LORD will deal with them as he dealt with Sihon and Og, the Amorite kings, and with their land, when he destroyed them. 5The LORD will hand them over to you, and you must deal with them exactly as I have commanded you. 6Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid of them or tremble before them, for the LORD your God is the one who goes with you. He will not let you go, and he will not abandon you.”
7Then Moses summoned Joshua and, with all Israel looking on, said to him, “Be strong and courageous. You are the one who will go with this people into the land the LORD swore to their ancestors to give them, and you will divide it among them as their inheritance.b 8The LORD himself goes ahead of you, and he will be with you. He will not let you go or abandon you. Do not be afraid or lose heart.” 9Then Moses put this law in writing. He handed it to the priests, the descendants of Levi, who were the bearers of the ark of the covenant of the LORD, and to all of Israel’s elders. 10Moses gave them this command: “At the end of every seven years, at the set time of the year of release, during the Festival of Booths, 11when all Israel comes to appear before the LORD your God at the place of his choosing, you must read this law aloud to all Israel, so that they hear it. 12Gather the people together, men, women and children, and the outsiders who live in your towns, so that they may hear and learn, and fear the LORD your God, and carefully obey all the words of this law. 13Their children, who do not yet know it, will hear it too and learn to fear the LORD your God for as long as you live in the land you are crossing the Jordan to take possession of.”
Joshua commissioned at the tent of meeting
14The LORD said to Moses, “The time of your death is near. Call Joshua, and the two of you come and stand at the tent of meeting, so that I can commission him.” So Moses and Joshua went and took their places at the tent of meeting. 15Then the LORD appeared in a pillar of cloud at the tent, and the pillar stood over its entrance.
Write down this song
16The LORD said to Moses, “You are about to rest with your ancestors. Then this people will rise up and prostitute themselves to the foreign gods of the land they are entering. They will abandon me and break my covenant, which I made with them. 17On that day my anger will blaze against them. I will abandon them and hide my face from them, and they will be devoured. Many disasters and troubles will overtake them, and on that day they will say, ‘Have these disasters not come on us because our God is no longer with us?’ 18Yes, I will certainly hide my face on that day because of all the evil they have done in turning to other gods. 19So now write down this song for yourselves, and teach it to the Israelites. Put it on their lips, so that this song will be my witness against the Israelites. 20For when I have brought them into the land flowing with milk and honey that I swore to give their ancestors, and they have eaten their fill and grown fat, they will turn to other gods and serve them. They will treat me with contempt and break my covenant. 21And when many disasters and troubles overtake them, this song will speak against them as a witness, because their descendants will not forget it. I know what their hearts are inclined to do even now, before I have brought them into the land I swore to give them.” 22So Moses wrote down this song that same day and taught it to the Israelites. 23Then the LORD commissioned Joshua son of Nun. He said, “Be strong and courageous. You are the one who will bring the Israelites into the land I swore to give them, and I will be with you.”c 24When Moses had finished writing out the words of this law in a book, to the very last word, 25he gave this order to the Levites, the bearers of the ark of the covenant of the LORD: 26“Take this book of the law and set it next to the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God. Let it stay there as a witness against you. 27I know how rebellious and stubborn you are. Even now, while I am still alive and with you, you have been rebelling against the LORD. How much more will you rebel after I am dead! 28Gather to me all the elders of your tribes and your officials, so that I can speak these words for them to hear and call heaven and earth as witnesses against them. 29For I know that once I am dead you will become utterly corrupt and turn aside from the way I have commanded you. In days to come disaster will strike you, because you will do what is evil in the sight of the LORD and provoke him to anger by what your hands have made.” 30Then Moses recited the words of this song from beginning to end, while the whole assembly of Israel listened:
