David shows faithful love to Mephibosheth
1David asked, “Is there anyone still left from the house of Saul, so that I can show him faithful love for Jonathan’s sake?” 2Now there was a servant of Saul’s house named Ziba, and they summoned him to David. The king said to him, “Are you Ziba?” “I am your servant,” he said. 3The king asked, “Is there no one left from the house of Saul, to whom I can show the faithful love of God?” Ziba answered the king, “There is still a son of Jonathan. He is lame in both feet.” 4“Where is he?” the king asked him. Ziba said to the king, “He is in the house of Machir son of Ammiel, in Lo-debar.” 5So King David sent and had him brought out of the house of Machir son of Ammiel, at Lo-debar. 6Mephibosheth son of Jonathan, the son of Saul, came to David, fell on his face and bowed low. David said, “Mephibosheth!” “I am your servant,” he answered. 7David said to him, “Do not be afraid. I will certainly show you faithful love for the sake of your father Jonathan. I will give you back all the land that belonged to your grandfather Saul, and you yourself will always eat at my table.” 8He bowed down again and said, “Who is your servant, that you would pay attention to a dead dog like me?” 9Then the king summoned Ziba, Saul’s attendant, and said to him, “I have given your master’s grandson everything that belonged to Saul and to his whole family. 10You, your sons and your servants are to work the land for him and bring in its harvest, to provide food for your master’s grandson to eat. But Mephibosheth himself, your master’s grandson, will always eat at my table.” Ziba had fifteen sons as well as twenty servants.a 11Ziba said to the king, “Your servant will do everything that my lord the king commands his servant.” So the king said, “Mephibosheth will eat at my table like one of the king’s sons.”b 12Mephibosheth had a young son named Mica. Everyone who lived in Ziba’s household became servants of Mephibosheth. 13So Mephibosheth made his home in Jerusalem, because he always ate at the king’s table. He was lame in both feet.
