David defeats the Ammonites and the Arameans

1Some time after this, the king of the Ammonites died, and his son Hanun became king in his place. 2David said, “I will show faithful love to Hanun son of Nahash, just as his father showed faithful love to me.” So David sent his officials to console Hanun over the death of his father. And David’s officials came to the land of the Ammonites. 3But the Ammonite officials said to Hanun their lord, “Do you really think David is honoring your father by sending men to comfort you? Has David not sent his officials to you to explore the city, spy it out, and overthrow it?” 4So Hanun seized David’s officials, shaved off half of each man’s beard, cut off their garments in the middle at their buttocks, and sent them away. 5When David was told, he sent messengers to meet them, because the men were deeply ashamed. The king said, “Stay in Jericho until your beards have grown back, and then come home.” 6When the Ammonites saw that they had made themselves hateful to David, they sent and hired 20,000 foot soldiers from the Arameans of Beth-rehob and of Zobah, the king of Maacah with 1,000 men, and 12,000 men from Tob. 7When David heard about this, he sent out Joab with the whole army of warriors. 8The Ammonites marched out and formed their battle line at the gateway of the city, while the Arameans of Zobah and Rehob, along with the men of Tob and Maacah, took a separate position in the open country. 9Joab saw that the battle lines faced him both in front and behind. So he picked some of Israel’s best troops and lined them up against the Arameans. 10He put the rest of the troops under the command of his brother Abishai, and he lined them up against the Ammonites. 11Joab said, “If the Arameans are too strong for me, you must come to my rescue. But if the Ammonites are too strong for you, I will come and rescue you. 12Be strong! Let us show courage for the sake of our people and the cities of our God. And may the LORD do what seems good to him.” 13Then Joab and the troops with him advanced to fight the Arameans, and the Arameans fled from him. 14When the Ammonites saw the Arameans flee, they also fled from Abishai and withdrew into the city. Then Joab turned back from fighting the Ammonites and came to Jerusalem. 15When the Arameans saw that they had been beaten by Israel, they gathered their forces together. 16Hadadezer sent for the Arameans who were beyond the Euphrates River and brought them out. They came to Helam, and Shobach, the commander of Hadadezer’s army, was at their head. 17When David was told, he gathered all Israel, crossed the Jordan, and came to Helam. The Arameans lined up for battle against David and fought with him. 18But the Arameans fled before Israel, and David killed the crews of 700 of their chariots and 40,000 horsemen. He also struck down Shobach, the commander of their army, and he died there. 19All the kings who were subject to Hadadezer saw that Israel had defeated them, so they made peace with Israel and became its subjects. After this the Arameans were afraid to give the Ammonites any more help.
