Eliphaz answers: who that was innocent ever perished?
1Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered: 2If someone dares to say a word to you, will you lose patience? \q Yet who can keep from speaking? 3Think how you have taught many \q and strengthened hands that hung limp. 4Your words have lifted up those who stumbled, \q and you have made firm the knees that were giving way. 5But now it has come to you, and you lose patience; \q it strikes you, and you are terrified. 6Is not your fear of God your confidence, \q and the integrity of your ways your hope? 7Think back now: who that was innocent has ever perished? \q Where have the upright been wiped out? 8As I have seen, those who plow evil \q and sow trouble harvest the same. 9At the breath of God they perish; \q by the blast of his anger they are finished. 10The lion may roar and the fierce lion growl, \q but the teeth of the young lions are broken. 11The strong lion dies for lack of prey, \q and the lioness’s cubs are scattered. 12A word was brought to me in secret; \q my ear caught only a whisper of it. 13amid troubled thoughts from visions in the night, \q when deep sleep falls on people, 14fear and trembling came upon me \q and made all my bones shake. 15Then a spirit glided past my face; \q the hair on my body stood on end.a 16It stood still, but I could not make out what it looked like. \q A form was before my eyes; \q there was silence, and then I heard a voice:b 17Can a mortal be righteous before God? \q Can anyone be pure before their Maker?c 18Even in his servants he puts no trust, \q and he charges his angels with error,d 19how much more those who live in houses of clay, \q whose foundation is in the dust, \q who are crushed like a moth!e 20Between morning and evening they are shattered; \q unnoticed, they perish forever. 21Is not the cord of their tent pulled up? \q They die, and without wisdom.f
