A lament for the ship Tyre

1The word of the LORD came to me: 2Now you, son of man, raise a lament over Tyre, 3and say to Tyre, the city that sits at the gateways of the sea, \q trading with the peoples of many coastlands, \q The Lord GOD says this: \q Tyre, you have said, “I am perfect in beauty.” 4Your territory is in the heart of the seas; \q your builders made your beauty perfect. 5They built all your planks from the junipers of Senir; \q a cedar from Lebanon was taken to be your mast. 6They made your oars of oaks from Bashan; \q they made your deck of box wood from the coastlands of Kittim, inlaid with ivory. 7Your sail was of fine embroidered linen from Egypt, \q and it served as your banner; \q your awning was of blue and purple cloth from the coastlands of Elishah. 8Men from Sidon and Arvad were your rowers; \q your own skilled men, Tyre, were on board as your sailors. 9The veteran craftsmen of Gebal were on board, \q caulking your seams. \q All the ships of the sea and their crews came to you \q to barter for your goods. 10Men of Persia, Lud and Put served in your army as your warriors. \q They hung their shields and helmets in you; \q they gave you your splendor. 11Men of Arvad and Helech manned your walls on every side, \q and men of Gamad were in your towers. \q Their shields hung around your walls; \q they made your beauty perfect. 12Tarshish did business with you because of your great wealth of every kind; \q they traded silver, iron, tin and lead for your goods. 13Javan, Tubal and Meshech traded with you; \q they exchanged slaves and bronze vessels for your goods. 14From Beth-togarmah \q they traded horses, war horses and mules for your goods. 15The people of Dedan traded with you; \q many coastlands were markets under your control; \q they paid you with ivory tusks and ebony. 16Aram did business with you because you had so many products; \q they gave turquoise, purple cloth, embroidered work, fine linen, coral and rubies for your goods. 17Judah and the land of Israel were your traders; \q for your goods they gave wheat from Minnith, millet, honey, oil and balm. 18Damascus did business with you because of your many products and your great wealth of every kind, \q trading wine from Helbon and wool from Zahar. 19Vedan and Javan from Uzal traded for your goods; \q wrought iron, cassia and sweet cane were among the goods you bought. 20Dedan traded with you \q in saddle blankets for riding. 21Arabia and all the princes of Kedar \q were traders under your hand; \q in lambs, rams and goats, \q in these they did business with you. 22The merchants of Sheba and Raamah traded with you; \q they gave the finest of all spices, every kind of precious stone, and gold for your goods. 23Haran, Canneh and Eden, the merchants of Sheba, \q Asshur and Chilmad traded with you. 24They traded with you in fine clothing, \q in cloaks of blue and embroidered work, and in multicolored carpets \q tied with cords and well made, in your market. 25Ships of Tarshish carried your goods; \q you were filled with cargo and heavily laden in the heart of the seas. 26Your rowers brought you out onto the mighty waters; \q the east wind wrecked you in the heart of the seas. 27Your wealth, your wares and your goods, \q your mariners and your sailors, \q those who caulk your seams and those who trade your goods, all your warriors on board and all the crew within you, \q will sink into the heart of the seas \q on the day of your downfall. 28At the sound of your sailors’ cry \q the shores will quake. 29All who handle the oar will come down from their ships, \q the mariners and all the sailors of the sea; \q they will stand on the shore. 30They will raise their voices over you and cry out bitterly. \q They will heap dust on their heads \q and wallow in ashes. 31They will shave their heads because of you and put on sackcloth. \q They will weep over you with anguish of heart and bitter wailing. 32As they wail, they will raise a lament over you and chant over you: \q “Who was ever like Tyre, \q now silent in the middle of the sea? 33When your goods went out across the seas, \q you satisfied many peoples; \q with your great wealth and your merchandise \q you made the kings of the earth rich. 34Now that you are wrecked by the seas, in the depths of the waters, \q your goods and all your crew have sunk with you. 35All who live on the coastlands are appalled at your fate; \q their kings shudder with horror, \q and their faces are twisted with fear. 36The merchants among the peoples hiss at you; \q you have come to a terrifying end, \q and you will be no more forever.”
