The watchman’s duty
1The word of the LORD came to me: 2Son of man, speak to your own people and say to them, Suppose I bring the sword on some land, and its people pick one of their number and make him their watchman, 3and he sees the sword coming against the land and blows the ram’s horn to warn the people. 4If anyone hears the sound of the horn but does not take the warning, and the sword comes and takes them away, their blood will be on their own head. 5They heard the sound of the horn but did not take the warning, so their blood will be on them. If they had taken the warning, they would have saved their life. 6But if the watchman sees the sword coming and does not blow the horn, so that the people are not warned, and the sword comes and takes the life of any one of them, that person is taken away for their sin, but I will hold the watchman responsible for their death.
Ezekiel is appointed watchman again
7As for you, son of man, I have appointed you a watchman for the house of Israel. When you hear a word from my mouth, you must warn them for me. 8If I say to a wicked person, “Wicked one, you will surely die,” and you do not speak out to turn them from their way, that wicked person will die for their sin, but I will hold you responsible for their death. 9But if you warn the wicked to turn from their way, and they do not turn from it, they will die for their sin, but you will have saved yourself.
Turn back and live
10As for you, son of man, say to the house of Israel, This is what you have been saying: “Our rebellious acts and our sins weigh on us, and we are wasting away because of them. How then can we live?” 11Tell them, As surely as I live, declares the Lord GOD, the death of the wicked gives me no pleasure. I would rather that they turn from their ways and live. Turn back, turn back from your evil ways! Why would you die, house of Israel?
Each person judged by their own ways
12As for you, son of man, say to your own people, The righteousness of righteous people will not save them when they rebel. And the wickedness of wicked people will not bring them down when they turn from their wickedness. Righteous people will not be able to live by their righteousness when they sin. 13If I say that righteous people will surely live, but they trust in their own righteousness and do wrong, none of the righteous things they have done will be remembered. Because of the wrong they have done, they will die. 14Again, if I say to wicked people, “You will surely die,” but they turn from their sin and do what is just and right, 15if they return what was given them as a pledge, pay back what they have taken by robbery, and follow the statutes that give life, doing nothing wrong, they will surely live; they will not die. 16None of the sins they have committed will be remembered against them. They have done what is just and right; they will surely live. 17Yet your own people say, “The Lord’s way is not fair.” But it is their own way that is not fair. 18If righteous people turn away from their righteousness and do wrong, they will die for it. 19And if wicked people turn away from their wickedness and do what is just and right, they will live because of it. 20Yet you say, “The Lord’s way is not fair.” House of Israel, I will judge each of you according to your ways. 21In the twelfth year of our exile, in the tenth month, on the fifth day of the month, a survivor who had escaped from Jerusalem came to me and said, “The city has fallen!”ab 22The evening before the survivor arrived, the hand of the LORD had come on me, and he had opened my mouth by the time the man reached me the next morning. My mouth was opened, and I was silent no more.
The claim of those left in the ruins
23The word of the LORD came to me: 24Son of man, the people who live among those ruins in Israel keep saying, “Abraham was just one man, and yet the land became his. But there are many of us. The land has surely been given to us to possess.”
25Therefore say to them, The Lord GOD says this: You eat meat with the blood still in it, look to your idols and shed blood. And you expect to possess the land? 26You rely on your sword, you do detestable things, and each of you defiles his neighbor’s wife. And you expect to possess the land?
27Say this to them: The Lord GOD says this: As surely as I live, those who are in the ruins will fall by the sword, whoever is out in the open field I will give to the wild animals to be eaten, and those in the strongholds and caves will die of plague. 28I will make the land a desolate waste, and the strength it was so proud of will come to an end. The mountains of Israel will be so desolate that no one will travel through them. 29Then they will know that I am the LORD, when I make the land a desolate waste because of all the detestable things they have done.
Hearers who do not act
30As for you, son of man, your own people are talking about you beside the walls and in the doorways of their houses. They say to one another, “Come and hear what message has come from the LORD.” 31They come to you as people usually do and sit in front of you as if they were my people. They hear your words, but they do not put them into practice. With their mouths they speak of love, but their hearts are set on gain.c 32To them you are like someone who sings love songs with a beautiful voice and plays an instrument well. They hear your words, but they do not put them into practice. 33But when all this comes true, and it surely will, they will know that a prophet has been among them.
