Edom brought down
1The vision of Obadiah. \q The Lord GOD says this about Edom: We have heard news from the LORD; a messenger has been sent among the nations: \q “Rise up! Let us rise up against her in battle!” 2See, I will make you small among the nations; \q you will be utterly despised. 3The pride of your heart has deceived you, \q you who live in the clefts of the rock, whose home is on the heights, \q who say to yourself, \q “Who can bring me down to the ground?” 4Though you soar as high as the eagle, \q though your nest is placed among the stars, \q I will bring you down from there, declares the LORD. 5If thieves came to you, if robbers came by night \q (how you will be destroyed!), \q would they not steal only as much as they wanted? \q If grape pickers came to you, \q would they not leave a few grapes behind? 6How Esau will be ransacked, \q his hidden treasures hunted down! 7All your allies will drive you to the border; \q your friends will deceive you and overpower you; \q those who share your bread will lay a trap for you. \q There is no understanding in Edom.a 8On that day, declares the LORD, \q will I not destroy the wise from Edom, \q and understanding from Mount Esau? 9Your warriors will be terrified, Teman, \q so that everyone on Mount Esau will be cut down in the slaughter.b 10Because of the violence you did to your brother Jacob, \q you will be covered in shame and cut off forever. 11On the day you stood at a distance, \q on the day strangers carried off his wealth \q and foreigners entered his gates and cast lots for Jerusalem, \q you were like one of them. 12You should not have gloated over your brother’s day, the day of his misfortune, \q nor rejoiced over the people of Judah on the day of their ruin, \q nor boasted so loudly on the day of their distress.c 13You should not have marched through the gate of my people on the day of their disaster, \q nor gloated, you of all people, over his calamity on the day of his disaster, \q nor seized his wealth on the day of his disaster. 14You should not have stood at the crossroads \q to cut down those who escaped, \q nor handed over his survivors on the day of distress. 15For the day of the LORD is close at hand for all the nations. \q As you have done, so it will be done to you; \q what you have dealt out will come back on your own head. 16Just as you drank on my holy mountain, \q all the nations will keep on drinking; \q they will drink and gulp it down, \q and be as if they had never existed.d 17But on Mount Zion there will be survivors, and it will be holy; \q and the house of Jacob will take possession of what belongs to them.e 18The house of Jacob will become a fire, and the house of Joseph will be a flame, and the house of Esau will be stubble; \q they will set them ablaze and burn them up. \q No survivor will be left to the house of Esau, \q for the LORD has spoken. 19The people of the Negev will take possession of Mount Esau, and the people of the Shephelah the land of the Philistines; \q they will take possession of the territory of Ephraim \q and the territory of Samaria, \q and Benjamin will possess Gilead.f 20The exiles of this army of Israel will take possession of the Canaanite land as far as Zarephath, \q and the exiles of Jerusalem who are in Sepharad \q will possess the towns of the Negev.gh 21Deliverers will go up onto Mount Zion \q to rule over Mount Esau, \q and the kingdom will belong to the LORD.i
