The army divisions

This is the list of the Israelites by number: heads of families, commanders of thousands and of hundreds, and the officials under them, who served the king in every matter that concerned the divisions. One division came on duty and another went off duty month by month throughout the year, and each division had 24,000 men.

In charge of the first division, for the first month, was Jashobeam son of Zabdiel. His division numbered 24,000. 3He was a descendant of Perez and was chief of all the army commanders for the first month. 4In charge of the division for the second month was Dodai the Ahohite, and Mikloth was the chief officer of his division. His division numbered 24,000.

The third army commander, for the third month, was Benaiah son of Jehoiada the priest, who served as chief. His division numbered 24,000. 6This was the Benaiah who was a mighty warrior among the Thirty and was over the Thirty. His son Ammizabad was in charge of his division.

The fourth commander, for the fourth month, was Asahel the brother of Joab, and after him his son Zebadiah. His division numbered 24,000.

The fifth commander, for the fifth month, was Shamhuth the Izrahite. His division numbered 24,000.

The ninth commander, for the ninth month, was Abiezer the Anathothite, a Benjaminite. His division numbered 24,000.

The tenth commander, for the tenth month, was Maharai the Netophathite, a Zerahite. His division numbered 24,000.

The eleventh commander, for the eleventh month, was Benaiah the Pirathonite, an Ephraimite. His division numbered 24,000.

The twelfth commander, for the twelfth month, was Heldai the Netophathite, of the family of Othniel. His division numbered 24,000.

The leaders of the tribes

Over the tribes of Israel were these: for the Reubenites, the ruler was Eliezer son of Zichri; for the Simeonites, Shephatiah son of Maacah;

for Levi, Hashabiah son of Kemuel; for Aaron, Zadok;

for Judah, Elihu, one of David’s brothers; for Issachar, Omri son of Michael;

for Zebulun, Ishmaiah son of Obadiah; for Naphtali, Jerimoth son of Azriel;

for the Ephraimites, Hoshea son of Azaziah; for the half-tribe of Manasseh, Joel son of Pedaiah;

for the half-tribe of Manasseh in Gilead, Iddo son of Zechariah; for Benjamin, Jaasiel son of Abner;

for Dan, Azarel son of Jeroham. These were the leaders over Israel’s tribes. 23David did not count those who were twenty years old or younger, because the LORD had promised to make Israel as many as the stars in the sky. 24Joab son of Zeruiah began to count them but did not finish. Because of this, wrath came on Israel, and the number was not entered in the record of the History of King David.
