Shemaiah forbids war

1When Rehoboam arrived in Jerusalem, he mustered the house of Judah and Benjamin, 180,000 picked warriors, to fight against Israel and regain the kingdom for Rehoboam.

2But the word of the LORD came to Shemaiah the man of God: 3“Speak to Rehoboam son of Solomon, king of Judah, and to all Israel in Judah and Benjamin, and tell them, 4‘The LORD says this: Do not go up to fight against your relatives. Go home, every one of you, for this thing has come from me.’” So they heeded the words of the LORD and turned back from marching against Jeroboam.

Rehoboam fortifies Judah

5Rehoboam stayed in Jerusalem and built up cities in Judah for defense. 6He fortified Bethlehem, Etam, Tekoa, 7Beth-zur, Socoh, Adullam, 8Gath, Mareshah, Ziph, 9Adoraim, Lachish, Azekah, 10Zorah, Aijalon and Hebron, fortified cities in Judah and Benjamin. 11He strengthened the fortresses and put commanders in them, with stores of food, oil and wine. 12In every city he placed large shields and spears and made the cities very strong. So Judah and Benjamin remained his.

Priests and Levites come to Judah

13The priests and the Levites who lived throughout Israel took their stand with him, coming from all their territories. 14The Levites left their pasturelands and their property and came to Judah and Jerusalem, because Jeroboam and his sons had cast them out of their service as priests of the LORD. 15He appointed his own priests for the high places, for the goat-demons and for the calves he had made. 16Following them, people from all the tribes of Israel who had set their hearts on seeking the LORD, the God of Israel, came to Jerusalem to sacrifice to the LORD, the God of their ancestors. 17They gave strength to the kingdom of Judah and stood by Rehoboam son of Solomon for three years, since for three years they walked in the way of David and Solomon. 18Rehoboam married Mahalath, whose father was Jerimoth son of David and whose mother was Abihail daughter of Eliab son of Jesse. 19She bore him sons: Jeush, Shemariah and Zaham. 20After her he married Maacah daughter of Absalom, and she bore him Abijah, Attai, Ziza and Shelomith. 21Rehoboam loved Maacah daughter of Absalom more than all his other wives and concubines. He had taken eighteen wives and sixty concubines, and he fathered twenty-eight sons and sixty daughters. 22Rehoboam appointed Abijah son of Maacah as chief, the ruler among his brothers, because he intended to make him king. 23He acted wisely: he dispersed some of his sons throughout all the districts of Judah and Benjamin, to all the fortified cities. He gave them plenty of provisions and sought many wives for them.
