The Philistines

1This message from the LORD came to the prophet Jeremiah about the Philistines, before Pharaoh struck Gaza:

2The LORD says this: See, waters are rising in the north; \q they will become a torrent in flood \q and sweep over the land and everything in it, \q the city and all who live there. \q People will cry out, \q and everyone who lives in the land will wail. 3At the sound of his stallions’ hooves pounding, \q at the clatter of his chariots and the rumble of their wheels, \q fathers do not turn back for their children; \q their hands hang limp, 4because the day is coming to destroy all the Philistines \q and to cut off from Tyre and Sidon every ally they have left. \q For the LORD is destroying the Philistines, \q what is left of the coastland of Caphtor. 5Gaza has shaved its head in mourning; \q Ashkelon is silenced, the remnant of their valley. \q How long will you gash yourself?

6Ah, sword of the LORD, \q how long before you are quiet? \q Go back into your sheath; \q rest and be still. 7But how can you be quiet \q when the LORD has given you orders? \q Against Ashkelon and the seacoast, there he has sent you.
