The sons of Israel

¹These were the sons of Israel: Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Zebulun, ²Dan, Joseph, Benjamin, Naphtali, Gad and Asher.

The descendants of Judah

³The sons of Judah: Er, Onan and Shelah. Bath-shua, a Canaanite woman, was the mother of these three. But Er, Judah’s firstborn, was evil in the LORD’s eyes, and he brought his life to an end.

⁴His daughter-in-law Tamar bore him Perez and Zerah. Judah had five sons in all.

⁵The sons of Perez: Hezron and Hamul.

⁶The sons of Zerah: Zimri, Ethan, Heman, Calcol and Dara, five in all.^a

⁷The son of Carmi: Achar, the one who brought trouble on Israel by breaking faith over the devoted things.^bc

⁸The son of Ethan: Azariah. ⁹The sons born to Hezron: Jerahmeel, Ram and Chelubai. ¹⁰Ram was the father of Amminadab, and Amminadab was the father of Nahshon, the leader of the people of Judah. ¹¹Nahshon was the father of Salma, and Salma was the father of Boaz. ¹²Boaz was the father of Obed, and Obed was the father of Jesse. ¹³Jesse was the father of Eliab his firstborn, Abinadab the second, Shimea the third, ¹⁴Nethanel the fourth, Raddai the fifth, ¹⁵Ozem the sixth and David the seventh.^{d 16}Their sisters were Zeruiah and Abigail. The sons of Zeruiah: Abishai, Joab and Asahel, three of them.^{e 17}Abigail bore Amasa, and Amasa’s father was Jether the Ishmaelite.^{f 18}Caleb son of Hezron had children by Azubah his wife and by Jerioth. Her sons were Jesher, Shobab and Ardon.^{gh 19}When Azubah died, Caleb married Ephrath, and she bore him Hur. ²⁰Hur was the father of Uri, and Uri was the father of Bezalel.

²¹Later Hezron lay with the daughter of Machir the father of Gilead, whom he took as his wife at the age of sixty. She bore him Segub. ²²Segub was the father of Jair, who had twenty-three towns in the land of Gilead. ²³But Geshur and Aram took Havvoth-jair from them, with Kenath and its villages, sixty towns. All these were descendants of Machir the father of Gilead. ²⁴After Hezron died in Caleb-ephrathah, his wife Abijah bore him Ashhur the father of Tekoa.^{ij 25}The sons of Jerahmeel the firstborn of Hezron: Ram the firstborn, then Bunah, Oren, Ozem and Ahijah.^{k 26}Jerahmeel had another wife, named Atarah. She was the mother of Onam.

²⁷The sons of Ram the firstborn of Jerahmeel: Maaz, Jamin and Eker. ²⁸The sons of Onam: Shammai and Jada. The sons of Shammai: Nadab and Abishur. ²⁹Abishur’s wife was named Abihail, and she bore him Ahban and Molid. ³⁰The sons of Nadab: Seled and Appaim. Seled died without sons.

³¹The son of Appaim: Ishi. The son of Ishi: Sheshan. The descendant of Sheshan: Ahlai.^{l 32}The sons of Jada the brother of Shammai: Jether and Jonathan. Jether died without sons.

³³The sons of Jonathan: Peleth and Zaza. These were the descendants of Jerahmeel. ³⁴Sheshan had no sons, only daughters. But Sheshan had an Egyptian servant named Jarha. ³⁵Sheshan gave his daughter as a wife to his servant Jarha, and she bore him Attai. ³⁶Attai was the father of Nathan, and Nathan was the father of Zabad.^{m 37}Zabad was the father of Ephlal, and Ephlal was the father of Obed. ³⁸Obed was the father of Jehu, and Jehu was the father of Azariah. ³⁹Azariah was the father of Helez, and Helez was the father of Eleasah. ⁴⁰Eleasah was the father of Sismai, and Sismai was the father of Shallum. ⁴¹Shallum was the father of Jekamiah, and Jekamiah was the father of Elishama. ⁴²The sons of Caleb the brother of Jerahmeel: Mesha his firstborn, who was the father of Ziph, and the sons of Mareshah the father of Hebron.^{n 43}The sons of Hebron: Korah, Tappuah, Rekem and Shema. ⁴⁴Shema was the father of Raham the father of Jorkeam, and Rekem was the father of Shammai. ⁴⁵The son of Shammai: Maon, and Maon was the father of Beth-zur. ⁴⁶Ephah, Caleb’s concubine, bore Haran, Moza and Gazez. Haran was the father of Gazez.^o

⁴⁷The sons of Jahdai: Regem, Jotham, Geshan, Pelet, Ephah and Shaaph.^{p 48}Maacah, Caleb’s concubine, bore Sheber and Tirhanah. ⁴⁹She also bore Shaaph the father of Madmannah, and Sheva the father of Machbenah and of Gibea. Caleb’s daughter was Achsah.^q

⁵⁰These were the descendants of Caleb. The sons of Hur the firstborn of Ephrathah: Shobal the father of Kiriath-jearim,^{r 51}Salma the father of Bethlehem, and Hareph the father of Beth-gader.^{s 52}Shobal the father of Kiriath-jearim had descendants: Haroeh, half of the Manahathites.^{t 53}The clans of Kiriath-jearim: the Ithrites, the Puthites, the Shumathites and the Mishraites. From these came the Zorathites and the Eshtaolites.

⁵⁴The descendants of Salma: Bethlehem, the Netophathites, Atroth-beth-joab, half of the Manahathites, and the Zorites. ⁵⁵The clans of scribes who lived at Jabez: the Tirathites, the Shimeathites and the Sucathites. These were the Kenites who came from Hammath, the father of the house of Rechab.^uv
