The capture of Rabbah

¹When the year came round again, at the season when kings set out on campaign, Joab led out the army in force. He ravaged the land of the Ammonites, then came and besieged Rabbah. But David himself stayed behind in Jerusalem. Joab attacked Rabbah and tore it down. ²David took the crown from their king’s head. He found that it weighed about 75 pounds of gold, and it held a precious stone. It was placed on David’s head. He also brought a great amount of plunder out of the city.^{a 3}He brought out the people who were in the city and cut them with saws, with iron picks and with more saws. David did the same to all the towns of the Ammonites. Then David and all the troops returned to Jerusalem.^bc

Battles with the descendants of the Rapha

⁴After this, war broke out with the Philistines at Gezer. He too was descended from the Rapha. ⁷When he taunted Israel, Jonathan son of Shimea, David’s brother, killed him. ⁸These were descendants of the Rapha in Gath, and they fell at the hands of David and his men.
