Asa king of Judah

1Asa did what was good and right in the sight of the LORD his God. 2He took away the foreign altars and the high places, smashed the standing stones and cut down the Asherah poles. 3He commanded Judah to seek the LORD, the God of their ancestors, and to carry out the law and its commands. 4He removed the high places and the incense altars from all the cities of Judah, and the kingdom had peace under him. 5He built fortified cities in Judah, since the land had peace. No one went to war with him in those years, because the LORD had given him rest. 6He said to Judah, “Let us build these cities and put walls around them, with towers, gates and bars. The land is still ours, for we have sought the LORD our God. We sought him, and he gave us rest all around.” So they built, and they prospered.

Victory over Zerah the Cushite

7Asa had an army of 300,000 men from Judah, armed with large shields and spears, and 280,000 from Benjamin, who carried small shields and drew the bow. All of them were mighty warriors. 8Zerah the Cushite marched out against them with an army of a million men and 300 chariots, and he came as far as Mareshah. 9Asa went out to meet him, and they took up their positions for battle in the Valley of Zephathah near Mareshah. 10Then Asa cried out to the LORD his God: “LORD, there is no one but you to help when the weak stand against the strong. Help us, LORD our God, because we are depending on you; it is in your name that we have marched out against this huge army. LORD, you are our God. Let no mortal hold out against you.”

11The LORD struck down the Cushites before Asa and before Judah, and the Cushites fled. 12Asa and the troops with him chased them as far as Gerar. So many Cushites fell that they could not recover; they were shattered before the LORD and his army. The men of Judah carried off a great deal of plunder. 13They attacked all the cities around Gerar, for the dread of the LORD lay on them. They plundered all those cities, since there was a great deal of plunder in them. 14They also attacked the herders’ camps and carried off sheep and goats in great numbers, and camels. Then they returned to Jerusalem.
