Hananiah breaks the yoke
1In that same year, early in the reign of Zedekiah king of Judah, in the fifth month of the fourth year, the prophet Hananiah son of Azzur, from Gibeon, spoke to me. It was in the house of the LORD, with the priests and all the people looking on:a 2“The LORD of Armies, the God of Israel, says this: I have broken the yoke of the king of Babylon. 3Within two full years I will bring back to this place all the vessels of the house of the LORD that Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon took from here and carried to Babylon. 4I will also bring Jeconiah son of Jehoiakim king of Judah back to this place, with every exile of Judah who went off to Babylon, declares the LORD; for I will break the king of Babylon’s yoke.” 5Then the prophet Jeremiah spoke to the prophet Hananiah in the presence of the priests and of all the people standing there in the house of the LORD. 6The prophet Jeremiah said, “Amen! May the LORD do just that! May the LORD make the words you have prophesied come true, and bring the vessels of the house of the LORD and all the exiles back from Babylon to this place. 7But listen now to this word that I speak in your hearing and in the hearing of all the people. 8The prophets who came before you and me, from ancient times, prophesied war, disaster and plague against many countries and great kingdoms.b 9But the prophet who prophesies peace will be known as one whom the LORD has truly sent when his word comes to pass.” 10Then the prophet Hananiah took the yoke bar off the neck of the prophet Jeremiah and broke it. 11And Hananiah spoke in the presence of all the people: “The LORD says this: In just this way, within two full years, I will break the yoke of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and take it off the neck of every nation.” Then the prophet Jeremiah went away.
A yoke of iron
12After the prophet Hananiah had broken the yoke bar off the neck of the prophet Jeremiah, the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah: 13“Go and tell Hananiah, ‘The LORD says this: You have broken bars of wood, but in their place you have made bars of iron.c 14For the LORD of Armies, the God of Israel, says this: It is a yoke of iron that I have put on the neck of all these nations, so that they serve Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon; and serve him they will. I have given him even the wild animals.’” 15Then the prophet Jeremiah said to the prophet Hananiah, “Hear this, Hananiah! The LORD has not sent you, and yet you have made this people trust in a lie. 16Therefore the LORD says this: I am about to send you off the face of the earth. This year you will die, because you have urged rebellion against the LORD.” 17And the prophet Hananiah died that same year, in the seventh month.
