Ammon

1Concerning the Ammonites. The LORD says this: \q Has Israel no children? \q Has it no heir? \q Then why has Milcom taken over Gad, \q and why do his people live in its towns? 2So the days are coming, declares the LORD, when I will make the battle cry ring out against Rabbah of the Ammonites. It will become a mound of ruins, \q and its villages will go up in flames. \q Then Israel will drive out those who drove it out, says the LORD. 3Wail, Heshbon, for Ai is laid waste! Cry out, you villages of Rabbah! \q Put on sackcloth \q and mourn; \q run back and forth inside the stone walls! \q For Milcom will go into exile, \q and his priests and officials with him. 4Why do you boast of your valleys, \q your valley so rich, \q you faithless daughter? \q You trust in your treasures \q and say, “Who would come against me?” 5I am about to bring terror on you from all who surround you, declares the Lord GOD of Armies. \q You will be driven away, each of you running headlong, \q and no one will gather those who flee. 6Yet afterward I will restore the fortunes of the Ammonites, declares the LORD.

Edom

7Concerning Edom. The LORD of Armies says this: \q Is there no wisdom left in Teman? \q Have the wise run out of counsel? \q Has their wisdom turned sour? 8Run! Turn and flee! Hide deep in the ground, \q you who live in Dedan! \q For I am bringing disaster on Esau, the time when I punish him. 9If grape pickers came to you, \q would they not leave a few grapes behind? \q If thieves came at night, they would ruin only as much as they wanted. 10But I have stripped Esau bare; I have laid open his hiding places, \q and he cannot conceal himself. \q His children, his relatives and his neighbors are destroyed, and he is gone. 11Leave your orphans behind; I will keep them alive. \q Let your widows trust in me.

12For the LORD says this: If those who did not deserve to drink the cup must drink it, \q do you really think you will go unpunished? \q You will not go unpunished; \q you must drink it. 13For I swear by myself, declares the LORD, \q that Bozrah will become a horror, a disgrace, a wasteland and a curse, \q and all its towns will be ruins forever. 14I have heard news from the LORD; \q a messenger has been sent among the nations: \q “Gather together and attack her! \q Rise up for battle!” 15For see, I will make you small among the nations, \q despised by all people. 16The terror you strike into others and the pride of your heart have deceived you, \q you who live in the clefts of the rock, \q who hold the heights of the hill. \q Though you build your nest as high as the eagle’s, \q I will bring you down from there, declares the LORD. 17Edom will become a horror; \q everyone who passes by \q will be appalled and will hiss in scorn at all its wounds. 18As when Sodom and Gomorrah and the towns near them were overthrown, says the LORD, \q no one will live there; \q no human being will settle in it. 19Look, an enemy will come up like a lion from the thick brush along the Jordan \q against the pastures that never run dry. \q In an instant I will chase Edom from its land, \q and I will set over it the one I choose. \q For who is like me? Who can call me to account? \q What shepherd can stand against me?

20So hear the plan the LORD has made against Edom, \q the purposes he has formed \q against the people of Teman: \q even the little ones of the flock will be dragged away; \q he will make their pasture a desolate place because of them. 21At the sound of their fall \q the earth shakes; \q their cry is heard as far as the Red Sea. 22Look! Like an eagle he rises and swoops down \q and spreads his wings over Bozrah. \q On that day the warriors of Edom will have hearts \q like the heart of a woman in labor.

Damascus, Kedar and Elam

23Concerning Damascus. Hamath and Arpad are dismayed, \q for they have heard bad news, and their courage melts. \q They are troubled like the sea, \q which cannot be still. 24Damascus has lost her strength; she has turned to run, and panic has taken hold of her; \q distress and pain grip her like a woman in labor. 25Why has the city of renown not been abandoned, \q the town of my joy? 26So her young men will fall in her streets, \q and all her soldiers will be silenced on that day, \q declares the LORD of Armies. 27I will set fire to the wall of Damascus, \q and it will burn up the fortresses of Ben-hadad.

28Concerning Kedar and the kingdoms of Hazor, which Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon defeated. \q The LORD says this: \q Rise up, march against Kedar, \q and destroy the people of the east! 29Their tents and their flocks will be seized; \q their tent curtains, all their goods and their camels will be carried off. \q People will shout at them, “Terror on every side!” 30Run! Get far away! Hide deep in the ground, you who live in Hazor, declares the LORD. \q For Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon has made a plan against you; \q he has worked out a scheme against you. 31Rise up and attack a nation at ease, living without a care, declares the LORD, \q a nation with no gates and no bars, whose people live by themselves. 32Their camels will become plunder and their great herds spoil; \q I will scatter to every wind those who clip the hair at their temples, \q and I will bring disaster on them from every side, declares the LORD. 33Hazor will become a haunt of jackals, a wasteland forever. \q No one will live there; \q no human being will settle in it.

34This message from the LORD came to the prophet Jeremiah about Elam, early in the reign of Zedekiah king of Judah: 35The LORD of Armies says this: \q I am going to break the bow of Elam, \q the mainstay of their strength. 36I will bring against Elam the four winds from the four ends of the heavens, \q and I will scatter its people \q to all these winds. \q There will not be a nation \q that Elam’s exiles do not reach. 37I will fill Elam with terror before their enemies, before those who want them dead. I will bring disaster on them, my fierce anger, declares the LORD. \q I will send the sword after them \q until I have finished them off. 38I will set up my throne in Elam \q and destroy the king and officials there, declares the LORD. 39Yet in days to come I will restore the fortunes of Elam, declares the LORD.
