No more than forty strokes

1Suppose two people have a dispute and go to court, and the judges decide the case, declaring the one who is in the right innocent and the one who is in the wrong guilty. 2If the guilty person deserves to be beaten, the judge is to make him lie down and have him flogged in his presence with the number of strokes his offense deserves. 3He may be given up to forty strokes, but no more. If he were beaten with many more strokes than that, your fellow Israelite would be degraded in your sight.

4You must not muzzle an ox when it is treading out grain.

A brother’s widow

5When brothers live together on the family land and one of them dies without a son, his widow must not be married to someone outside the family. Instead, her husband’s brother shall marry her and so do for her the duty of a husband’s brother. 6The first son she bears shall bear the dead brother’s name, so that the dead man’s name is not wiped out from Israel. 7But if the man is unwilling to marry his brother’s widow, she shall go up to the elders at the town gate and say, ‘My husband’s brother refuses to keep his brother’s name alive in Israel. He will not do the duty of a husband’s brother for me.’ 8Then the elders of his town are to summon him and speak with him. If he holds to his refusal and says, ‘I do not want to marry her,’ 9then his brother’s widow is to go up to him in front of the elders, pull his sandal off his foot and spit in his face. She shall then declare, ‘So it shall be done to any man who refuses to build up his brother’s family.’ 10And his family will be known in Israel as ‘The family of the man whose sandal was pulled off.’

11If two men are fighting each other and the wife of one of them comes up to rescue her husband from the man who is hitting him, and she reaches out and grabs the other man by his private parts, 12then you must cut off her hand. Show her no pity.

Honest weights and measures

13You must not carry two different weights in your bag, one heavy and one light.

14You must not keep two different grain measures in your house, one large and one small. 15You must have weights that are complete and honest, and measures that are complete and honest, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you. 16For the LORD your God detests anyone who does such things, anyone who acts dishonestly.

Remember Amalek

17Remember what Amalek did to you on your journey out of Egypt, 18how they met you on the road when you were tired and worn out and struck at your rear, cutting down all who were lagging behind. They had no fear of God. 19So when the LORD your God has given you rest from all the enemies around you in the land the LORD your God is giving you to possess as an inheritance, you must wipe out the memory of Amalek from under the heavens. Do not forget.
