Your neighbor’s animals

1If you see a fellow Israelite’s ox or sheep wandering loose, do not look the other way. Be sure to take the animal back to him. 2If the owner does not live near you, or you do not know who he is, take the animal home with you and keep it until he comes looking for it. Then give it back to him. 3Do the same with a donkey or a cloak, or anything else a fellow Israelite loses and you find. You must not look the other way.

4If you see a fellow Israelite’s donkey or ox fallen on the road, do not look the other way. Be sure to help him get it back on its feet.

5A woman must not wear a man’s things, and a man must not put on a woman’s clothing, because the LORD your God detests anyone who does these things.

A bird’s nest by the road

6If you happen to come across a bird’s nest beside the road, in a tree or on the ground, with chicks or eggs in it and the mother bird sitting on the chicks or the eggs, do not take the mother along with her young. 7Be sure to let the mother go free, though you may take the young for yourself, so that things may go well with you and you may live a long life.

8When you build a new house, put a low wall around the edge of the roof, so that you do not bring guilt for a death on your household if someone falls from it.

Two kinds together

9Do not sow your vineyard with a second kind of seed, or the whole yield will be forfeited to the sanctuary, both the crop you have sown and the fruit of the vineyard.

10Do not plow with an ox and a donkey yoked together.

11Do not wear clothing woven of wool and linen together.

12Make tassels on the four corners of the cloak you wrap yourself in.

Charges against a bride

13If a man marries a woman and sleeps with her, but then turns against her, 14and charges her with shameful behavior and ruins her reputation, saying, ‘This is the woman I married, but when I slept with her, I did not find evidence that she was a virgin,’ 15the young woman’s father and mother are to take the evidence of her virginity and bring it to the elders of the town at the gate. 16The young woman’s father is to say to the elders, ‘I gave my daughter to this man in marriage, but he has turned against her. 17Now he has charged her with shameful behavior, saying, “I did not find evidence that your daughter was a virgin.” But here is the evidence of my daughter’s virginity.’ Then they are to spread out the cloth in front of the elders of the town. 18The elders of that town are then to take the man and punish him, 19and fine him about 2 1/2 pounds of silver, which they are to give to the young woman’s father, because this man has ruined the reputation of a virgin of Israel. She is to remain his wife, and he may never divorce her as long as he lives.

20But if the charge is true, and no evidence of the young woman’s virginity is found, 21then they are to bring her out to the doorway of her father’s house, and there the men of her town are to stone her to death, because she has done an outrageous thing in Israel by being sexually immoral while living in her father’s house. In this way you will remove the evil from among you.

A married or engaged woman

22If a man is caught sleeping with another man’s wife, both of them must die, the man who slept with her and the woman as well. In this way you will remove the evil from Israel.

23If a young woman who is a virgin is engaged to a man, and another man meets her in the town and sleeps with her, 24you are to take both of them out to the gate of that town and stone them to death: the young woman because, though she was in the town, she did not cry for help, and the man because he dishonored another man’s wife. In this way you will remove the evil from among you.

25But if the man comes upon the engaged young woman out in the countryside, and he overpowers her and rapes her, then only the man who did this must die. 26Do nothing to the young woman; she has committed no sin that deserves death. This case is like that of a man who attacks his neighbor and murders him. 27He came upon her out in the countryside; the engaged young woman cried for help, but there was no one there to rescue her.

28If a man comes upon a young woman who is a virgin and not engaged, and he seizes her and sleeps with her, and they are discovered, 29the man who slept with her must pay the young woman’s father about 1 1/4 pounds of silver, and she is to become his wife because he violated her. He may never divorce her as long as he lives.
