Turning back to the LORD

1When all these things have come upon you, the blessing and the curse that I have set before you, and you take them to heart among all the nations where the LORD your God has driven you, 2and you and your children turn back to the LORD your God and obey him with all your heart and with all your soul, doing all that I command you today, 3then the LORD your God will restore your fortunes and have compassion on you. He will gather you again from all the peoples among whom the LORD your God has scattered you. 4Even if you have been driven out to the farthest edge of the sky, from there the LORD your God will gather you up, and from there he will take you back. 5The LORD your God will bring you into the land your ancestors took possession of, and you will take possession of it. He will make you more prosperous and more numerous than your ancestors. 6The LORD your God will circumcise your heart and the hearts of your descendants, so that you love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul, and so live. 7The LORD your God will lay all these curses on your enemies, the people who hate you and persecuted you. 8As for you, you will turn back and obey the LORD, and keep all his commandments that I am giving you today. 9The LORD your God will give you plenty in all that you do, in the children you bear, the young of your livestock and the crops of your soil, for your good. For the LORD will once more take delight in doing you good, as he took delight in your ancestors, 10if you obey the LORD your God and keep his commandments and statutes, as they are recorded in this book of the law, and if you turn back to the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul.

The word is very near you

11For this commandment that I am giving you today is not too difficult for you, nor is it out of reach. 12It is not in heaven, that you would need to ask, ‘Who will climb up to heaven for us and get it for us, and tell it to us so that we can do it?’ 13Nor is it on the far side of the sea, that you would need to ask, ‘Who will cross the sea for us and get it for us, and tell it to us so that we can do it?’ 14No, the word is very near you, in your mouth and in your heart, for you to do.

Life and good, death and harm

15See, today I have placed before you life and good, death and harm. 16For what I command you today is that you love the LORD your God, walk in his ways, and keep his commandments, statutes and rulings. Then you will live and grow numerous, and the LORD your God will bless you in the land you are entering to take possession of. 17But if your heart turns away and you will not listen, and you are drawn away to bow down to other gods and serve them, 18I tell you plainly today that you will certainly be destroyed. You will not live long in the land you are crossing the Jordan to enter and take possession of. 19Today I call heaven and earth to testify against you: I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse. So choose life, that you and your descendants may live, 20by loving the LORD your God, obeying him and holding fast to him. For he is your life and your long years, so that you may live in the land that the LORD swore to give to your ancestors, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.”
