Stones and an altar on Mount Ebal
Moses and the elders of Israel gave the people this command: “Keep the whole commandment that I am giving you today. 2On the day you cross the Jordan into the land the LORD your God is giving you, set up some large stones and coat them with plaster. 3When you have crossed over, write on them every word of this law, so that you may enter the land the LORD your God is giving you, a land flowing with milk and honey, as the LORD, the God of your ancestors, promised you. 4When you have crossed the Jordan, put these stones up on Mount Ebal and coat them with plaster, as I command you today.a 5Build an altar there to the LORD your God, an altar of stones. Do not use any iron tool on them. 6Use uncut stones to build the altar of the LORD your God, and offer burnt offerings on it to the LORD your God. 7Sacrifice peace offerings, eat them there, and rejoice in the presence of the LORD your God. 8And write on the stones all the words of this law, very clearly.”
Today you have become the people of the LORD
Then Moses and the Levitical priests spoke to all Israel: “Be still and listen, Israel! Today you have become the people of the LORD your God. 10So obey the LORD your God and carry out his commandments and statutes that I am giving you today.”
The curses from Mount Ebal
On that day Moses gave the people this command: 12“When you have crossed the Jordan, these tribes are to stand on Mount Gerizim to bless the people: Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Joseph and Benjamin. 13And these tribes are to stand on Mount Ebal for the curse: Reuben, Gad, Asher, Zebulun, Dan and Naphtali. 14Then the Levites are to call out in a loud voice to all the people of Israel:
‘Cursed is anyone who makes a carved or cast idol, a thing the LORD detests, the work of a craftsman’s hands, and sets it up in secret.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’
‘Cursed is anyone who dishonors their father or mother.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’
‘Cursed is anyone who moves their neighbor’s boundary marker.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’
‘Cursed is anyone who leads a blind person astray on the road.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’
‘Cursed is anyone who denies justice to the outsider, the fatherless, or the widow.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’
‘Cursed is anyone who has sexual relations with his father’s wife, for he has violated his father’s marriage.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’
‘Cursed is anyone who has sexual relations with any animal.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’
‘Cursed is anyone who has sexual relations with his sister, whether she is his father’s daughter or his mother’s daughter.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’
‘Cursed is anyone who has sexual relations with his mother-in-law.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’
‘Cursed is anyone who strikes down their neighbor in secret.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’
‘Cursed is anyone who takes a bribe to kill an innocent person.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’
‘Cursed is anyone who does not uphold the words of this law by doing them.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’b
