The Ten Words

1Moses summoned all Israel and said to them, “Hear, Israel, the statutes and rulings that I am announcing to you today. Learn them and be careful to do them. 2The LORD our God made a covenant with us at Horeb. 3The LORD did not make this covenant with our fathers; he made it with us, the ones here today, all of us still alive. 4On the mountain the LORD spoke with you face to face, out of the fire. 5I was standing between the LORD and you at that time, to make known to you the word of the LORD, since you were afraid of the fire and would not go up the mountain. He said:

6‘I am the LORD your God. I brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house where you were slaves. 7You shall have no other gods besides me. 8You shall not make yourself a carved idol in the form of anything in the heavens overhead, on the earth below, or in the waters beneath the earth. 9You shall neither bow to them nor serve them. For I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God. I bring the guilt of fathers upon their children, upon the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me, 10but to thousands who love me and keep my commandments I show faithful love.

11You shall not use the name of the LORD your God for what is false or worthless, for the LORD will not let anyone go unpunished who uses his name that way.

12Keep the Sabbath day and set it apart as holy, as the LORD your God commanded you. 13You have six days to labor and do all your work, 14but the seventh day is a Sabbath for the LORD your God. Do no work on it: not you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your ox or your donkey or any of your livestock, nor the foreigner living among you in your towns, so that your male and female servants may rest as you do. 15Remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and that the LORD your God led you out from there by a strong hand and an outstretched arm. For this reason the LORD your God has commanded you to observe the Sabbath day. 16Honor your father and your mother, as the LORD your God has commanded you. Then your days will be long, and it will go well with you in the land the LORD your God is going to give you.

17You shall not murder. 18You shall not commit adultery. 19You shall not steal. 20You shall not give baseless evidence against your neighbor.

21You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife. You shall not crave your neighbor’s house, his field, his male or female servant, his ox or his donkey, or anything else your neighbor has.’

Out of the fire

22The LORD spoke these words to your whole assembly at the mountain, in a great voice out of the fire, the cloud and the thick darkness, and he said no more. He wrote them on two tablets of stone and gave them to me. 23When you heard the voice coming out of the darkness and the mountain was burning with fire, all your tribal heads and your elders came near to me, 24and you said, ‘The LORD our God has shown us his glory and his greatness, and we have heard his voice out of the fire. Today we have seen that God may speak with a person, and that person may still live. 25So why should we die now? This great fire will devour us. If we go on hearing the voice of the LORD our God, we will die. 26Of all mortals, who has heard the voice of the living God speak from the fire as we have, and stayed alive? 27You go near and hear all that the LORD our God says, and then you tell us all that the LORD our God tells you; we will listen and do it.’ 28The LORD heard what you said when you spoke to me, and the LORD said to me, ‘I have heard what this people said to you. They have spoken well in everything they said. 29If only their hearts would stay like this, so that they would fear me and keep all my commandments always, and it would go well with them and with their children forever! 30Go and tell them, “Go back to your tents.” 31But you, stay here with me, and I will tell you the whole commandment, the statutes and the rulings that you are to teach them, so that they may do them in the land I am giving them to take possession of.’ 32Take care, then, to do just as the LORD your God has commanded you, turning neither to the right nor to the left. 33Walk in every part of the way that the LORD your God has commanded you. Then you will live, it will be well with you, and your days will be long in the land you are going to take possession of.
