Praise for the fall of the proud city
1LORD, you are my God! \q I will lift you high and give thanks to your name. \q You have worked a marvel: \q purposes formed long ago, carried out with steadfast faithfulness. 2You have reduced a city to a mound of stones \q and a walled town to rubble. \q The palace-fort of foreigners has stopped being a city; \q no one will ever build it again. 3So a mighty people will give you glory; \q the city of brutal nations will stand in awe of you. 4You have been a fortress for the weak, a fortress for the needy when trouble pressed on them, \q cover from the downpour and shade from the scorching sun. \q The blast of tyrants is like a storm battering a wall.a 5As heat bakes parched ground, so you bring down the roar of foreigners; \q the way a passing cloud’s shade takes the edge off the heat, the tyrants’ song of triumph dies away.b
A feast for all peoples on the mountain
6On this mountain the LORD of Armies will spread a banquet for all the peoples: \q a feast of the richest food, a feast of wine long aged, \q dishes rich with marrow, old wine strained clear. 7On this mountain he will swallow up the veil drawn over the faces of all the peoples, \q the cloth woven across all the nations. 8He will swallow up death for all time. \q The Lord GOD will wipe every face clean of tears \q and lift from all the earth the disgrace of his people, for the LORD has spoken.c
Waiting for God, and the fall of Moab
9On that day people will say: \q Look, this is our God! We waited for him, and he will rescue us. \q This is the LORD, the one we waited for; \q let us be full of joy and delight in his salvation. 10The hand of the LORD will rest upon this mountain, \q but Moab will be crushed underfoot on its own ground, like straw stamped down into a dung heap. 11There Moab will spread out its hands, as a swimmer spreads them out to swim, \q but he will bring its pride down, for all the cunning of its hands.d 12Your high fortress with its towering walls he will throw down; he will level it, bringing it to the ground, down into the dust.
