The mountain of the house of the LORD

1This is the word that Isaiah son of Amoz saw about Judah and Jerusalem. 2In days to come, the mountain of the LORD’s house will stand firm, the chief of all the mountains, \q rising high above the hills, \q and the nations will all stream toward it. 3Peoples in great numbers will set out, saying, “Come, let us climb to the mountain of the LORD, up to the house of Jacob’s God, \q so that he may show us his ways and we may walk on his paths.” \q For instruction will go out from Zion, \q and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem. 4He will be judge between the nations and settle the cases of many peoples. \q They will hammer their swords into plow blades and their spears into knives for pruning. \q No nation will raise the sword against another, \q and they will no longer learn how to wage war.

5House of Jacob, come! \q Let us walk by the light of the LORD. 6For you have cast off your people, the house of Jacob, \q because they are crowded with what comes from the east and with soothsayers, as the Philistines are, \q and they strike hands with the sons of foreigners. 7Silver and gold fill their land, \q and their treasures are beyond counting; \q horses fill their land, \q and their chariots are beyond counting. 8Idols fill their land too. \q They worship things their own hands produced, objects shaped by their own fingers. 9So humankind sinks low, and each person is put down. \q Do not pardon them! 10Get into the rocks! Bury yourself in the dust, \q away from the dread of the LORD and from his majestic splendor! 11The arrogant gaze of humankind will be lowered, \q people’s lofty pride will be bent down, \q and on that day the LORD alone will be lifted high.

A day against everything proud

12For the LORD of Armies has set a day against everything proud and towering, \q against everything raised high, and it will be brought down, 13against all the cedars of Lebanon, high and towering, \q and against all the oaks of Bashan, 14against all the towering mountains, \q against all the hills raised high, 15against every tall tower, \q against every wall built strong, 16against all the ships of Tarshish, \q and against every splendid vessel. 17Humankind’s pride will be bent down, \q people’s lofty airs laid low, \q and on that day the LORD alone will be lifted high. 18As for the idols, they will be gone, every one. 19People will crawl into caves in the rock and pits in the ground, \q away from the dread of the LORD and from his majestic splendor, \q when he rises up to make the earth shudder. 20On that day people will fling away their idols of silver and their idols of gold, \q made for them to bow down to, \q out to the moles and the bats, 21so that they can creep into the cracks of the rocks and the crevices of the crags, \q away from the dread of the LORD and from his majestic splendor, \q when he rises up to make the earth shudder. 22Have done with humankind, who live by a breath in the nostrils, \q for what are they worth?
