David sets out to bring up the ark

1David consulted with the commanders of thousands and of hundreds, with every one of the leaders. 2Then David said to the whole assembly of Israel, “If you approve, and if this comes from the LORD our God, let us send out in every direction to our fellow Israelites who remain in all the territories of Israel, and to the priests and the Levites with them in the towns where they have their pasturelands, so that they may gather to us. 3Then let us bring the ark of our God back to us, for we did not seek it in the days of Saul.” 4The whole assembly agreed to do this, because the plan seemed right to all the people. 5So David assembled all Israel, from the Shihor of Egypt as far as Lebo-hamath, to bring the ark of God from Kiriath-jearim. 6David and all Israel went up to Baalah, that is, Kiriath-jearim, which belongs to Judah, to bring the ark of God up from there, the ark of the LORD who sits enthroned on the cherubim, the ark which is called by his name. 7They carried the ark of God on a new cart from Abinadab’s house, while Uzzah and Ahio drove the cart. 8David and all Israel were celebrating before God with all their might, with songs and with lyres, harps, tambourines, cymbals and trumpets. 9When they arrived at the threshing floor of Chidon, Uzzah put out his hand to take hold of the ark, for the oxen had stumbled. 10Then the anger of the LORD blazed against Uzzah, and he struck him down because he had put out his hand to the ark. He died there before God. 11David was angry because the LORD had burst out against Uzzah, and he named that place Perez-uzzah, a name it still has to this day. 12David was afraid of God that day, and he said, “How can I ever bring the ark of God to me?” 13So David did not take the ark into the city of David to be with him. Instead he turned aside and took it to the house of Obed-Edom the Gittite. 14The ark of God stayed for three months with the household of Obed-Edom in his house, and the LORD blessed Obed-Edom’s household and everything he had.
