1So Moses told the Israelites everything the LORD had commanded him.a
Vows and pledges
2Moses spoke to the heads of the tribes of the Israelites. He said, “This is what the LORD has commanded:b 3When a man makes a vow to the LORD or swears an oath that binds him to a pledge, he must not break his word. He must do everything he has said. 4When a woman makes a vow to the LORD or binds herself by a pledge while she is young and still living in her father’s house, 5and her father hears of her vow or her pledge and says nothing to her, then all her vows stand, and every pledge by which she has bound herself stands. 6But if her father forbids her on the day he hears of it, none of her vows or pledges by which she has bound herself will stand. The LORD will forgive her, because her father has forbidden her. 7If she marries while she is still under her vows, or under a rash promise of her lips by which she has bound herself, 8and her husband hears of it and says nothing to her on the day he hears, then her vows stand, and the pledges by which she has bound herself stand. 9But if her husband forbids her on the day he hears of it, he cancels the vow she is under and the rash promise of her lips by which she has bound herself, and the LORD will forgive her. 10But any vow of a widow or a divorced woman, anything by which she has bound herself, is binding on her. 11If a woman living in her husband’s house makes a vow or binds herself by a pledge with an oath, 12and her husband hears of it and says nothing to her and does not forbid her, then all her vows stand, and every pledge by which she has bound herself stands. 13But if her husband cancels them on the day he hears of them, then nothing that came from her lips, whether vows or pledges binding her, will stand. Her husband has cancelled them, and the LORD will forgive her. 14Any vow or any sworn pledge to deny herself, her husband may confirm or her husband may cancel. 15But if her husband says nothing to her from one day to the next, he confirms all her vows and all the pledges she is under. He has confirmed them, because he said nothing to her on the day he heard of them. 16But if he cancels them later, after the day he heard of them, he will bear the guilt that would have been hers.” 17These are the statutes that the LORD commanded Moses about a man and his wife, and about a father and his daughter while she is young and living in her father’s house.
