Four beasts from the sea
1In the first year of Belshazzar’s reign over Babylon, Daniel had a dream, and as he lay in bed, visions came into his mind. Then he wrote the dream down and gave an account of the main things in it. 2Daniel said: In my vision at night I looked, and I saw the four winds of heaven churning up the great sea. 3Four huge beasts rose out of the sea, each unlike the others. 4The first was like a lion, and it had eagle’s wings. As I watched, its wings were torn off, and it was lifted from the ground and set on two feet like a human being, and it was given a human mind. 5Then I saw another beast, a second one, that looked like a bear. It was raised up on one side, and it had three ribs in its mouth between its teeth. It was told, “Get up and eat your fill of flesh!” 6After that, as I watched, I saw another beast, like a leopard. On its back it had four wings like a bird’s, and the beast had four heads. It was given authority to rule. 7After that, in my visions at night, I saw a fourth beast, terrifying, frightening and very strong. It had huge iron teeth. It devoured and crushed its victims, and trampled what was left under its feet. It was unlike all the beasts before it, and it had ten horns. 8While I was studying the horns, another horn, a small one, grew up among them, and three of the earlier horns were pulled up by the roots to make room for it. This horn had eyes like a human’s eyes and a mouth that spoke boastfully.a 9As I watched, thrones were put in place, \q and the Ancient of Days was seated. \q His clothes were white as snow, and the hair of his head like clean wool. \q His throne was flames of fire, \q and its wheels were blazing fire.b 10A river of fire was streaming out, flowing from his presence. \q Thousands upon thousands served him, \q and countless thousands stood before him. \q The court was seated, and the books were opened. 11I kept watching because of the boastful words the horn was speaking. As I watched, the beast was put to death, and its body was destroyed and thrown into the blazing fire. 12The other beasts had their authority taken away, but they were allowed to go on living for a set period of time. 13As I watched in the visions of the night, \q I saw one like a son of man \q coming with the clouds of heaven. \q He came to the Ancient of Days \q and was presented before him.c 14He was given authority, glory and kingly power, \q so that all peoples, nations and languages would serve him. \q His authority is an everlasting authority that will never pass away, \q and his kingdom will never be destroyed.
The meaning of the vision
15I, Daniel, was deeply troubled in spirit, and the visions that passed through my mind frightened me. 16I went up to one of those standing there and asked him what all this really meant. So he told me the meaning of these things: 17“These four great beasts are four kings who will rise up from the earth.d 18But the holy ones of the Most High will receive the kingdom and hold it as their own forever, for ever and ever.”e 19Then I wanted to know what the fourth beast meant, the one that was different from all the others and so terrifying, with its iron teeth and bronze claws, that devoured and crushed its victims and trampled what was left under its feet. 20I wanted to know as well about the ten horns on its head, and about the other horn that came up, when three of them fell before it. That horn had eyes and a mouth that spoke boastfully, and it looked more imposing than the others. 21As I watched, this horn was waging war against the holy ones and was defeating them, 22until the Ancient of Days came and gave judgment in favor of the holy ones of the Most High. Then the time came for the holy ones to take possession of the kingdom.f 23He said this to me: “The fourth beast is a fourth kingdom that will rise on earth. It will be different from all the other kingdoms. It will devour the whole earth, trampling it down and crushing it. 24The ten horns are ten kings who will arise from this kingdom. After them another king will arise, different from the earlier ones, and he will bring down three kings. 25He will speak against the Most High and wear down the holy ones of the Most High. He will try to change the sacred times and the law, and they will be handed over to him for a time, two times and half a time.g 26But the court will sit in judgment, and his authority will be taken away, to be completely and finally destroyed. 27Then the kingdom and the authority and the greatness of all the kingdoms under heaven will be given to the people of the holy ones of the Most High. Their kingdom will last forever, and every ruler will serve and obey them.”hi 28This is the end of the account. As for me, Daniel, my thoughts terrified me, and the color drained from my face, but I kept the matter to myself.
