A prayer for the king’s reign
1Of Solomon. \q God, grant the king your justice, \q and the king’s son your righteousness. 2May he govern your people rightly, \q and your poor with fairness. 3May the mountains yield well-being for the people, \q and the hills bring it through righteousness. 4May he defend the poor among the people \q and bring rescue to needy families; \q may he break the oppressor in pieces. 5May people stand in awe of you as long as there is a sun and a moon, \q from one generation to the next.a 6May he be like rain falling on a cut field, \q like showers soaking the land. 7In his days may the righteous thrive, \q and peace overflow until the moon is gone. 8May his rule stretch from sea to sea, \q from the River to the far ends of the earth. 9Let the nomads of the desert kneel before him, \q and let his foes lick the dust. 10Let Tarshish and the coastlands send their kings with tribute; \q let the kings of Sheba and Seba bring him presents. 11Let every king bow low before him \q and every nation be his servant. 12For he rescues the needy when they cry out, \q and the poor who have no one else to stand by them. 13He feels for the weak and the needy, \q and he saves the lives of those in need. 14He sets them free from cruelty and violence; \q their lives are of great worth in his sight. 15May the king live! Let him receive Sheba’s gold; \q let prayer be made for him always, \q and blessing asked for him all day. 16Let grain grow thick across the land, right up to the hilltops; \q let its harvest rustle like the trees of Lebanon, \q and let city people spring up like grass in the fields. 17May his name live on forever, \q his fame spread as long as the sun shines. \q May all nations ask to be blessed as he is blessed, and call him happy. 18Blessed be the LORD God, Israel’s God; \q only he works wonders. 19Blessed be his glorious name for all time; \q may his glory fill all the earth. \q Amen and Amen. 20Here end the prayers of David son of Jesse.
