Abram and Lot part ways

1Abram left Egypt and went up to the Negev, taking his wife and all his possessions, and Lot came too. 2By now Abram was a very rich man, with herds and flocks, silver and gold. 3From the Negev he traveled in stages back to Bethel, to the spot between Bethel and Ai where he had first pitched his tent, 4where he had built the altar before. There Abram called on the name of the LORD. 5Lot, traveling with Abram, had his own flocks and herds and tents as well. 6The land could not sustain both of them living side by side; they had so much that they could not stay together. 7Before long Abram’s herdsmen and Lot’s herdsmen were at odds with each other. At that time the Canaanites and the Perizzites were also settled in the land. 8So Abram said to Lot, “There should be no quarrel between us, or between your herdsmen and mine. We are family. 9The whole land is open to you. Let us go our separate ways. You take the left and I will take the right, or you take the right and I will take the left.” 10Lot looked out over the Jordan plain and saw water everywhere, all the way to Zoar, as in the garden of the LORD or the land of Egypt. (That was before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah.) 11So Lot chose the whole Jordan plain for himself and moved off to the east. The two of them parted. 12Abram remained in Canaan; Lot settled among the towns of the plain and moved his camp as far as Sodom. 13The people of Sodom, however, were evil and grievous sinners against the LORD. 14After Lot had gone, the LORD said to Abram, “Raise your eyes and look out from where you stand, to the north and south, east and west. 15I am giving you all the land you can see, to you and your descendants for all time. 16I will make your descendants as countless as the dust of the earth; only if someone could count the dust could your descendants be counted. 17Go and travel the land from end to end and side to side, because I am giving it to you.” 18So Abram moved his tents and went to live near the great trees of Mamre at Hebron, where he built an altar to the LORD.
