God blesses Noah and his sons

1Then God blessed Noah and his sons and said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth. 2Every animal on the earth, every bird of the sky, every creature that moves along the ground and all the fish of the sea will fear you and dread you. They are placed in your power. 3Every living thing that moves will be food for you. Just as I gave you the green plants, I now give you everything. 4But you must not eat meat that still has its lifeblood in it. 5And for your lifeblood I will surely demand an accounting. I will demand it from every animal, and from every human being: from each person I will demand an accounting for the life of another. 6Whoever sheds human blood, by a human being that person’s blood will be shed; for God made human beings in his own image. 7As for you, be fruitful and multiply; spread over the earth and multiply on it.”

The covenant and the bow in the clouds

8Then God said to Noah and to his sons with him, 9“I now establish my covenant with you and with your descendants after you, 10and with every living creature that was with you, the birds, the livestock and all the wild animals, all those that came out of the ark with you, every living creature on earth. 11I establish my covenant with you: never again will all life be cut off by the waters of a flood, and never again will there be a flood to destroy the earth.” 12And God said, “This is the sign of the covenant I am making between me and you and every living creature with you, for all generations to come: 13I have set my bow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth. 14Whenever I bring clouds over the earth and the bow appears in the clouds, 15I will remember my covenant between me and you and every living creature of every kind. Never again will the waters become a flood to destroy all life. 16When the bow is in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of every kind on the earth.” 17So God said to Noah, “This is the sign of the covenant I have established between me and all life on the earth.”

Noah’s sons

18The sons of Noah who came out of the ark were Shem, Ham and Japheth. Ham was the father of Canaan. 19These three were the sons of Noah, and from them came all the people who spread over the earth. 20Noah, a man of the soil, was the first to plant a vineyard. 21When he drank some of its wine, he became drunk and lay uncovered inside his tent. 22Ham, the father of Canaan, saw his father naked and went out and told his two brothers. 23But Shem and Japheth took a garment, laid it across their shoulders and walked in backward to cover their father’s nakedness. Their faces were turned away, so they did not see their father naked. 24When Noah awoke from his wine and found out what his youngest son had done to him, 25he said, “Cursed be Canaan! He will be the lowest of servants to his brothers.” 26He also said, “Blessed be the LORD, the God of Shem! May Canaan be his servant. 27May God make room for Japheth, and may he live in the tents of Shem. May Canaan be his servant.” 28After the flood Noah lived 350 years. 29Altogether, Noah lived 950 years, and then he died.
