The families of Noah’s sons

¹This is the account of the families of Noah’s sons, Shem, Ham and Japheth. Sons were born to them after the flood. ²The sons of Japheth were Gomer, Magog, Madai, Javan, Tubal, Meshech and Tiras. ³The sons of Gomer were Ashkenaz, Riphath and Togarmah. ⁴The sons of Javan were Elishah, Tarshish, the Kittim and the Dodanim.^{a 5}From these the peoples of the coasts and islands spread out into their own lands, each with its own language, by their clans and nations. ⁶The sons of Ham were Cush, Egypt, Put and Canaan. ⁷The sons of Cush were Seba, Havilah, Sabtah, Raamah and Sabteca. The sons of Raamah were Sheba and Dedan. ⁸Cush was the father of Nimrod, who became the first great warrior on the earth. ⁹He was a mighty hunter before the LORD; that is why people say, “Like Nimrod, a mighty hunter before the LORD.”^{b 10}His kingdom began with Babylon, Erech, Akkad and Calneh, in the land of Shinar.^{c 11}From that land he went to Assyria, where he built Nineveh, Rehoboth-Ir, Calah^{d 12}and Resen, which is between Nineveh and Calah; that is the great city. ¹³Egypt was the ancestor of the Ludites, the Anamites, the Lehabites, the Naphtuhites, ¹⁴the Pathrusites, the Casluhites (from whom the Philistines came) and the Caphtorites.^e

¹⁵Canaan was the father of Sidon, his firstborn, and of Heth, ¹⁶and of the Jebusites, the Amorites, the Girgashites, ¹⁷the Hivites, the Arkites, the Sinites, ¹⁸the Arvadites, the Zemarites and the Hamathites. Later the clans of the Canaanites spread out, ¹⁹and the border of Canaan reached from Sidon toward Gerar as far as Gaza, and then toward Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboiim, as far as Lasha. ²⁰These are the descendants of Ham, by their clans and languages, in their lands and nations.

The descendants of Shem

²¹Sons were also born to Shem, the elder brother of Japheth; Shem was the ancestor of all the sons of Eber.^{f 22}The sons of Shem were Elam, Asshur, Arpachshad, Lud and Aram. ²³The sons of Aram were Uz, Hul, Gether and Mash. ²⁴Arpachshad was the father of Shelah, and Shelah was the father of Eber. ²⁵Two sons were born to Eber. One was named Peleg, because in his time the earth was divided. His brother was named Joktan.^{g 26}Joktan was the father of Almodad, Sheleph, Hazarmaveth, Jerah, ²⁷Hadoram, Uzal, Diklah, ²⁸Obal, Abimael, Sheba, ²⁹Ophir, Havilah and Jobab. All these were sons of Joktan. ³⁰The region where they lived stretched from Mesha toward Sephar, in the eastern hill country. ³¹These are the descendants of Shem, by their clans and languages, in their lands and nations. ³²These are the clans of Noah’s sons, by their family lines, in their nations. From these the nations spread out over the earth after the flood.
