The families of Noah’s sons
1This is the account of the families of Noah’s sons, Shem, Ham and Japheth. Sons were born to them after the flood. 2The sons of Japheth were Gomer, Magog, Madai, Javan, Tubal, Meshech and Tiras. 3The sons of Gomer were Ashkenaz, Riphath and Togarmah. 4The sons of Javan were Elishah, Tarshish, the Kittim and the Dodanim.a 5From these the peoples of the coasts and islands spread out into their own lands, each with its own language, by their clans and nations. 6The sons of Ham were Cush, Egypt, Put and Canaan. 7The sons of Cush were Seba, Havilah, Sabtah, Raamah and Sabteca. The sons of Raamah were Sheba and Dedan. 8Cush was the father of Nimrod, who became the first great warrior on the earth. 9He was a mighty hunter before the LORD; that is why people say, “Like Nimrod, a mighty hunter before the LORD.”b 10His kingdom began with Babylon, Erech, Akkad and Calneh, in the land of Shinar.c 11From that land he went to Assyria, where he built Nineveh, Rehoboth-Ir, Calahd 12and Resen, which is between Nineveh and Calah; that is the great city. 13Egypt was the ancestor of the Ludites, the Anamites, the Lehabites, the Naphtuhites, 14the Pathrusites, the Casluhites (from whom the Philistines came) and the Caphtorites.e
15Canaan was the father of Sidon, his firstborn, and of Heth, 16and of the Jebusites, the Amorites, the Girgashites, 17the Hivites, the Arkites, the Sinites, 18the Arvadites, the Zemarites and the Hamathites. Later the clans of the Canaanites spread out, 19and the border of Canaan reached from Sidon toward Gerar as far as Gaza, and then toward Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboiim, as far as Lasha. 20These are the descendants of Ham, by their clans and languages, in their lands and nations.
The descendants of Shem
21Sons were also born to Shem, the elder brother of Japheth; Shem was the ancestor of all the sons of Eber.f 22The sons of Shem were Elam, Asshur, Arpachshad, Lud and Aram. 23The sons of Aram were Uz, Hul, Gether and Mash. 24Arpachshad was the father of Shelah, and Shelah was the father of Eber. 25Two sons were born to Eber. One was named Peleg, because in his time the earth was divided. His brother was named Joktan.g 26Joktan was the father of Almodad, Sheleph, Hazarmaveth, Jerah, 27Hadoram, Uzal, Diklah, 28Obal, Abimael, Sheba, 29Ophir, Havilah and Jobab. All these were sons of Joktan. 30The region where they lived stretched from Mesha toward Sephar, in the eastern hill country. 31These are the descendants of Shem, by their clans and languages, in their lands and nations. 32These are the clans of Noah’s sons, by their family lines, in their nations. From these the nations spread out over the earth after the flood.
